ORLANDO: City Development

There is a lot of development spurring throughout the Orlando city and metro area. I am very surprised that there is not a forum discussing the recent projects that are occurring in the city. Therefore, this thread will start to display the projects that are occurring in and around the Orlando, Florida area!

More than just Disney...

I thought I'd finish by posting some pictures of downtown Orlando. The skyline is not the most impressive, but it is growing. It is becoming a remarkable city and is trying to establish a name for itself outside of the theme park industry. I really love this place!

Great pics. Orlando is growing like crazy ...it's definitely more than just Disney these days.

Orlando could be a great downtown -- all it needs is to raise those height limits to allow more density. Also, go the Dubai route to show that the city actually has something else to offer international visitors other than Mickey Mouse!

futuresooner Aug 31, 2015 2:38 AM

The main thing stifling taller buildings downtown is because of the flight path of Orlando Executive Airport just east of downtown. Unless the FAA changes the flight paths for the airport, which is highly unlikely due to the close proximity to OIA, things won't change.

ksinkler23 Sep 2, 2015 2:07 AM

I agree. I definitely wish that they would raise the height restriction in downtown, but I doubt that would happen. I think the city can still become dense if they build 300-400 feet skyscrapers and more high rises instead of mid-rises. Looking at the projects above, that's what they're aiming for. I want consistency. The skyline still has so much potential. I also want a unique and stylish building... It'll be a while before Orlando gets any of that. haha.

ksinkler23 Welcome to the forum! and thanks for the updates and new developments occurring in the Orlando area which is under going a nice boom downtown that isn't in the tourist related areas only.
Don't be surprised if you don't get many responses on this forum since SSP seems to be averse to anything Florida but I do appreciate your efforts!

ksinkler23 Sep 4, 2015 2:20 AM

Thank you bobdreamz! I appreciate it. I am a part of another forum and asked why Orlando didn't have a forum on here, and I got the same result. It's ok. I tried. I just love the city! :)

Nice. What's the height limit in Orlando?

Prahaboheme Sep 5, 2015 1:34 AM

The tallest downtown Orlando building is the Suntrust skyscraper at 441 feet. There likely wont be anything built higher than this as the executive airport is only a few miles east of the CBD and in the flight path.
As a result, much of the building boom in Orlando is midrise structures and smaller pedestrian scaled development. This has really helped to develop a walkable downtown area including the surrounding neighborhoods -- Uptown, Thornton Park, South Eola, etc.

The International Drive tourism corridor (about 20 miles southwest of downtown) is seeing proposals for taller structures.

Sorry about your weather. :( Hope they will get better in a few days.

ksinkler23 Sep 6, 2015 10:21 PM

I'm very glad to see that Crescent Central Station is moving along. I just can't wait to see some of the other projects kick off. Orlando is trying to become a dense city. But I will agree... these small scale apartment complexes are not going to be enough to suit the demand for Orlando housing. I would hope Orlando starts to build taller, at least around the 400 feet range, to become more dense. We DEFINITELY have to space to build higher.

It reminds me strongly of The Vendome in Dallas on Turtle Creek.
