SHANGHAI | International Finance Center | 858 FT / 260 M | 825 FT / 250 M

This project is now finally under-construction. I'm not sure if they build the two towers at once or phase it. The shorter tower is definitely UC.

One of my future favourites.

Jularc Mar 28, 2006 2:36 PM

Awesome. They are both magnificent!

Fabb Mar 28, 2006 4:25 PM

Weren't they initially supposed to be taller ?

kazpmk Mar 28, 2006 7:00 PM

^ yea, they were first planned to be a little over 1,000 ft

Fabb Mar 28, 2006 7:28 PM

So, the nice rendering is probably not accurate.

giallo Mar 29, 2006 1:19 AM

The renderings are current, Fabb. The old design had two towers at 330m opposed to today's three tower complex. I've heard they weren't approved because they totally blocked the Jin Mao from the NW and W of the Bund. It could also be a financial decision.

Here is the old rendering

That's a real shame. THe taller buildings would have really stood out, with the pair nicely offsetting the two supertalls. At this height they are in the same region as the line of buildings accross the street from the bank of china down to the development tower. Liu jia zui is going to have a lot of buildings of the same height.
The view blocking argument sounds ridiculous to me. They'll block it from one angle only. At 250m these buildings won't even be visible from the north of shanghai 'cos of the mentioned line of offices by the park and they'll barely poke over the shangri la, aurora line when viewed from the bund.

^ It does sound ridiculous, so that's why I think it's a financial decision...although I have no proof of this claim.
They will be the third and fourth tallest buildings in Lujiazui by floor height when completed, so it's not all bad.

Can't believe you took pictures in yesterday's fog.

Glad to see this underway.

That is a HUGE site, too bad they didn't go for 300m/1000ft. Looks like L.A. smog.

The site is looking a lot more orderly now

Are both towers under construction or just tower 1??

giallo May 12, 2006 3:34 AM

^ I'm beginning to think that both will go up at the same time. The site has so many crane cars, cement mixers and workers it's unbelievable. I'd need to shoot a pano to get all the action in one picture.

Are they already starting the construction?! I though they were scheduled to start for 2008-2009 or so. These are real beauties!

Fabb May 13, 2006 10:11 AM

I, too, was surprised (by the early start and the height reduction).

kazpmk May 27, 2006 11:21 PM

Actually, It's more likely that only one tower is Under construction. The plan origonally called for the project to be built in phases. Emporis:
"According to the plan the first phase of the project will be completed by the year 2008 with final completion expected for the year 2011."
So this project didn't really have an early start, phase 1 was always planned to be completed by 2008.
