EL PASO | Development Thread

This building would be El Paso's 2nd tallest building. The elevations show it at 287 feet, but the mechanical penthouses seem to go up another 10 feet above that. If that's the case, then this would tie their current tallest.

I've actually been working on creating a complete list of high rises in Texas. I've got almost everything so far from West Texas. I've been using Google Earth to measure the buildings with. The accuracy seems to be decent, even matching some heights I already had even from the developers, who I suspect may be using Google Earth themselves.

26-Story Tower Proposed for Downtown El Paso

By Armando Landin

Plans are in the works to bring a 26-story, mixed-use tower to El Paso's downtown. The brand new addition to the city's skyline would include a mix of retail spaces, hotel rooms, and apartments, at the corner of Mills Avenue and Campbell Street.

An eight-level parking garage is also part of the overall structure.

According to City documents, initial plans include a total of 180 hotel rooms spread out over eight floors, while 180 apartments will occupy the top 16 floors.

Retail spots will have storefronts along the street-level ground floor, with about 35,000 square feet available among multiple spaces.

The previous plan for this project called for a single 22-story building that was listed as 256 feet tall. Now apparently they're planning 3 buildings. Two "more slender" towers and a third 10-story hotel. Of course, the worry was this project would block the view of the mountains which rise just to east of there. I don't know how building three towers instead of one will change that.

Anyway, if they stick with the height they were talking about these would be the tallest buildings in El Paso outside of their downtown. The address is 201 Shadow Mountain Drive.

West Side high-rise plan now to have 3 buildings

Elida S. Perez, El Paso Times Published 4:54 p.m. MT March 16, 2017 | Updated 8:11 p.m. MT March 16, 2017

An exclusive condominium development on the West Side boasting luxury living will create the first cluster of high-rise buildings located outside of Downtown El Paso.

The Meyers Group is developing an empty 4-acre plot of land adjacent to the 11-story Coronado Tower office building on Mesa Street and has changed its original plan to build one large 22-story high-rise into three separate buildings.

The site eventually will have two narrower 22-story condo towers and one 10-story boutique hotel, along with a variety of retail and commercial spaces.
The building in the background on the left is an existing building called the Coronado Towers. It's 140 feet with 12 floors.

22-story West Side tower plan's height an issue

Vic Kolenc, El Paso Times Published 6:22 p.m. MT April 19, 2016

City planners like plans for a proposed 22-story, luxury hotel-apartment building in West El Paso, but are recommending the tower's height be reduced.

The building would be located on a vacant, 4-acre lot at 201 Shadow Mountain Drive, sandwiched between a Chase Bank branch and a strip shopping center, and near the 11-story Coronado Tower office building on Mesa Street. Apartment and condominium buildings are across the street.

The company's plan calls for a 219-room luxury hotel, under a still to be determined hotel brand, on the building's lower levels, and 228 luxury apartments on the upper floors. The project includes a 715-car parking garage with a swimming pool deck, almost 42,000 square feet of retail space, and more than 55,000 square feet of landscaping.

A Comprehensive List of Downtown Projects

601 North Mesa (Hunt Tower)

El Paso-based Hunt Companies has plans to build a mid-rise tower across the street from the Artspace Lofts, according to signs at the location which formerly housed a bank and is currently a parking lot.

Hunt purchased the property at 601 North Mesa Street in 2014, which is bounded by Mesa, Missouri Avenue, Oregon Street, and Wyoming Avenue.

Few details are available on this project, which is still in the planning stages. The lone available rendering shows a glass-clad tower with nine to eleven floors. The property is located in a prominent spot adjacent to Interstate 10.

The Marriott Courtyard downtown, listed in the link above, is under construction. It may even be finished by now. They're also building a huge medical center on the east side of El Paso near Fort Bliss for the base. It's under construction now. This thing started construction in 2013 and is behind schedule. It isn't expected to be complete until 2019.

Fort Bliss hospital behind schedule, $22M over budget

Vic Kolenc, El Paso Times Published 6:55 p.m. MT Oct. 21, 2016

Construction of the massive, new William Beaumont Army Medical Center complex at Fort Bliss is almost two years behind schedule and at least $22 million over the original contract award.

The $648 million contracted construction cost of the six-building hospital complex has swelled to about $670 million, and will likely grow, Brad Hartell, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' construction manager for the project, said during a recent tour of the construction site.

The 1.1-million-square-foot medical complex, located on 270 acres of Fort Bliss land at Spur 601 and Loop 375 in East El Paso, was slated to open in 2017. But delays have pushed the move-in date to July 2019.

El Paso Children’s Museum reveals finalist designs, now up for a public vote

Quote:

Renderings for the final three designs for the new El Paso Children’s Museum have been revealed, and residents of El Paso, Texas, can vote on their favorite until Friday, December 15th. All of the options, which include designs by Santa Monica-based Koning Eizenberg Architecture, Oslo-based Snøhetta, and Mexico-city based TEN Arquitectos, are designed around a master plan with specific installation requirements.

The $30 million Children’s Museum, officially named Spark, is the result of a $473.2 million “Quality of Life” bond program that began in 2012. Because Spark is meant to educate people of all ages, the master plan by Gyroscope Inc., a museum design firm, have included nine themed interactive zones, maker spaces, art studios, classrooms and rotating exhibition space. Those themed zones include everything from a climbing-centric room that draws inspiration from the nearby Franklin Mountains, to a rooftop water engineering center in the shadow of a full-scale model airplane.

The El Paso Community Foundation and other philanthropic groups involved with the museum expect to break ground in early 2018, and complete construction in the fall of 2020.

It's now 18-stories

Quote:

It will be the first office tower built in Downtown El Paso in more than 40 years. And now, it will also be one of the tallest.

The long-anticipated plan has gotten a big upgrade. City documents show the building will be 18 stories – not nine stories or 14 stories as originally imagined. And the investment has grown from $70 million to $85 million.
“It’s thrilling to be honest with you,” said Downtown real estate broker David Etzold.

The tower is scheduled to open around Fall 2020, Hunt Companies executive chairman Woody Hunt told El Paso Inc. in February.
