CITYPLACE - CONCORD ADEX - PARADE CONDOS

Text from interchange42 at www.urbantoronto.ca

The CityPlace neighbourhood being developed by Concord Adex on downtown Toronto's former railway lands continues to grow with Parade, the project's largest phase. Parade features four towers rising from two U-shaped podiums, encircling a central courtyard. Parade's eastern half was topped off in 2010, while construction continues on the western half currently. UrbanToronto members are particularly anticipating the west half's rise for two reasons: the cylindrical tower, rare in Toronto, and especially, the skybridge.

The skybridge will join the two tallest towers at the 28th and 29th levels. The top level will feature premium residences, while the lower level will feature exclusive amenity space. As seen above, the bridge is seven storeys shy of the top of the towers, while in actuality the towers have since had floors added: the east tower is 38 storeys high, and the west will be 43 storeys (both plus one mechanical topping the towers). The shorter towers at the southeast and southwest corners are 18 and 22 storeys respectively, while the podiums are 9 storeys high. Updated renderings with the new heights have not been released.

Here's another rendering of the whole complex, face-on. Parade is designed by New York-based giant Kohn Pedersen Fox Architects.

i'm looking forward to this one... hopefully they can get the base to be a bit more urban than all the other developments in cityplace.

I wanna see how they build the skybridge. This I have never seen before and it should be very exciting to watch.

With this I most certainly agree. Especially when viewed from the gardiner.

Very large” expansion joints and bearings where it connects to two towers at Concord Adex’s City Place will allow this skybridge being constructed by Walters Inc. to adjust to the movement of the buildings.

A 500-ton glass and steel residential skybridge high in the sky between two towering buildings has all the markings of a bold engineering feat you might expect in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates.

In fact, the unusual residences will grace the Toronto skyline next year.

The 130-foot-long two-storey sky bridge will link 38- and 43-storey residential towers at a dizzying 28 and 29-storey height. Billed as the highest skybridge residences in the world, it is part of a four-tower condo complex at Concord Adex’s CityPlace on the city’s former rail lands near the downtown waterfront.

Each of the two large residences will spill over from the towers into the upper level of the skybridge.

“The constructability of this bridge is extremely challenging,” says Peter Kranendonk, vice-president and general manager of Walters Inc., responsible for the structural steel design-assist, detailing, fabrication and installation.

Kranendonk says the biggest engineering challenge is how to detail the bridge to deal with a six or so inch sway expected in the two towers.

“Each of the buildings wants to move in its own way and the link between them has to accommodate those movements.”

The design employs “very large” expansion joints at connections to the towers and bearings with “translational capabilities” to move in all directions as the buildings move to ensure that the skybridge itself isn’t adversely impacted by sway, he says.

Plans call for bridge pre-assembly in the field on temporary falsework 40 feet off the ground, starting next winter. A wind study indicates the optimum time to do the lifting operation is early summer, he says.

The job will take about 10 hours of lifting and be completed in summer 2012.

They were being awful quiet about the bridge for a while there, I thought the cheapening might have struck and it wasn't going ahead. But not only is it going ahead, but its even more impressive than I thought!

Yeah, the skybridge is the only reason I posted this tower on this forum. Pretty unremarkable otherwise.

I don't know if I'd be suprised if they opted to omit the skybridge
I mean, it is Concord after all.
