Mayor Brown Stepping Down

Mayor Matt Brown Admits “Inappropriate” Affair With Deputy Mayor

LONDON, Ont.–Mayor Matt Brown is temporarily stepping down from his post after admitting to engaging in an “inappropriate,” months-long affair with Deputy Mayor Maureen Cassidy, who resigned as deputy mayor Tuesday evening.

(edit - I get too angry... need to drink again) fuck them both.

This is reminding me of the Fontana days...

Brown campaigned on restoring credibility in the mayor's office.

I thought this was a farce when I first read it.

I'm not particularly fond of either one, but I don't wish them a terrible life. They are going to live with the consequences.

I really do wonder if why BRT was rammed down our throat (sorry for the metaphor) so quickly and it was these two who led the charge.

You might say that it was forced onto unwilling victims. Does this mean that we get our trams now?

Look on the bright side, London now sort of has its own Bill Clinton. After Toronto's crack scandal subsided, municipal politics in Ontario got kind of dull. This has restored the juiciness.

Matt Brown frowns when bequeathing his crown as he steps down.

It really surprises me that people in these positions who consistently ask for others to be respectful and looking to "restore dignity" go around and cheat on their spouse. It's a pretty disrespectful thing to do primary to their families and quite honestly the people who voted for him.

I do not wish anything bad to him and hope he can recover some of his dignity but it will be a massive uphill climb.

Does this mean his vote and people on his side for BRT can recall haha????

Come on Helmer make us proud

Nice thought. Does anyone think that the whole rapid transit thing (whether BRT or LRT) is going to get deep-sixed if Brown steps down permanently over this?

After all, rapid transit is one of the planks Brown laid down as part of his campaign for the mayor's office. With him gone, Zuidema and the anti-RT crowd within city hall may well redouble their efforts to find a way to kill the project.

This whole thing has given me one of those Han Solo moments. You know, the part where he says, "I've got a bad feeling about this."

MolsonExport Jun 16, 2016 1:05 AM

Maybe. No matter what lobbying/pressure from outside groups, Brown let his little head do the thinking.

Yep. Exactly right. As one of my uncles said to me once, "A stiff prick has no conscience", LOL.

That's a lot more pessimistic than my initial interpretation. I assume that the BRT plan is locked in 100%, and I was hoping Brown's demise might lead to bringing LRT back on the table. After all, it was Brown who was so adamant we go BRT in the past few months.

manny_santos Jun 17, 2016 1:13 AM

What a city. Brown had been acting odd in recent months, after his campaign of change.

He's no Rob Ford, but I lose respect for politicians a little more every day.

I think the BRT option is pretty well locked-in, too. Remember that most of the members of city council voted against LRT. If LRT is revisited again in the very near future, the councillors on the 'no' side are not likely to change their minds unless they are co-opted somehow, or shown that reversing their initial decision is in their own personal best interests, politically and otherwise.

We are simply going to have to wait until we have an entirely new city council in place and a new, more forward-thinking mayor before we can have any hope of resurrecting the LRT part of the RT project.

Sadly, though, by the time we get to that point, other cities like Hamilton and the K-W region will already have functioning and likely thriving LRT systems, with the end result that people will move to those cities instead and not give London so much as a fleeting thought.

Once again, London manages to snatch the crown of mediocrity from its rickety post.

jaradthescot Jun 17, 2016 12:40 PM

Not quite. Regardless of if we went hybrid or full-BRT, the South-West, BRT-only portion was being built first. The North-East portion isn't being touched until after 2019. Don't get me wrong, I doubt we'll get LRT. Theoretically, though, (if the political will is there) it would not be hard to change the North-East portion (that at-that-point has not been touched) to LRT.

So apparently as I seen on the news today that he is not stepping down.

The question I have, will people still criticize Matt Brown for this 20 years from now? Bill Clinton is widely regarded as a good U.S. president despite his affair with Ms. Lewinsky.
