The Distance To...
I love those signs that show the distance from where you're standing to various points around the world.
Timeanddate.com has an easy little tool to calculate the straight-line distance between any two cities on earth. It's fun to explore - and there will probably be a few surprises for you. Here, for example, is the distance from St. John's to some various cities. I've bolded all of the non-Canadian ones for comparison: Halifax: 899 kilometers Augusta (Maine): 1368 kilometers Quebec City: 1404 kilometers Boston: 1554 kilometers New York City: 1859 kilometers Hamilton (Bermuda): 1979 kilometers Toronto: 2114 kilometers Ponta Delgada (Azores): 2454 kilometers Reykjavik: 2621 kilometers Winnipeg (CENTRE OF CANADA): 3230 kilometers Dublin: 3300 kilometers Miami: 3413 kilometers Lisbon: 3627 kilometers London (U.K.): 3750 kilometers Havana: 3779 kilometers Madrid: 3943 kilometers Paris: 4003 kilometers Rabat (Morocco): 4082 kilometers Yellowknife: 4091 kilometers Dakhla (Western Sahara): 4191 kilometers Oslo: 4220 kilometers Edmonton: 4225 kilometers Caracas (Venezuela): 4319 kilometers Zurich: 4493 kilometers Berlin: 4599 kilometers Algiers (Algeria): 4656 kilometers Prague: 4768 kilometers Dakar (Senegal, West Africa): 4885 kilometers Panama: 4966 kilometers Helsinki: 4975 kilometers Vienna: 4985 kilometers Vancouver: 5020 kilometers Rome: 5050 kilometers Victoria (B.C.): 5078 kilometers Warsaw: 5089 kilometers Whitehorse: 5193 kilometers What about yours? Any surprise you? I was surprised that we're closer to Yellowknife than Edmonton. The curvature of the earth has a greater impact than I thought, given how far south of Edmonton we are (we'd be in the States if we were that far west). I just assumed it would be farther to Yellowknife for that reason. Also, being closer to Africa than Alberta is a bit of a surprise as well. I knew were were close, but I imagined it'd be just a few hundred kilometres shy of the distance to B.C., not THAT much closer. |
Calgary to
South - Mexico City - 3747km North - Alert - 3874km West - Anadyr - 4092km East - St. John's - 4348km |
Vancouver to...
Tolagnaro, Madagascar - 17190km East London, South Africa - 17020km Durban, South Africa - 16960km Port Elizabeth, South Africa - 16940km Selected major cities furthest away... Far cry from the maximum of 20,040km though.... |
The distance from our provincial and territorial capitals to our national capital. Because of Canada's sheer size, Ottawa is certainly one of the few capitals to oversee such a widespread and diverse area.
From Ottawa to: Toronto: 353 kilometers Quebec City: 378 kilometers Fredericton: 706 kilometers Halifax: 958 kilometers Charlottetown: 978 kilometers Winnipeg: 1679 kilometers St. John's: 1774 kilometers Iqaluit: 2090 kilometers Regina: 2216 kilometers Edmonton: 2845 kilometers Yellowknife: 3101 kilometers Victoria: 3586 kilometers Whitehorse: 4151 kilometers |
OK, I'll bite......
Moncton to: Atlantic Canada - St. John's - 938 km - Halifax - 189 km - Charlottetown - 131 km - Saint John - 133 km - Fredericton - 143 km When you see that all other major cities in the Maritimes are less than 200 km away, you can understand why Moncton is nicknamed the "Hub City" Rest of Canada - Quebec City - 499 km - Montreal - 683 km - Ottawa - 848 km - Toronto - 1180 km - Winnipeg - 2428 km - Calgary - 3605 km - Vancouver - 4280 km - Whitehorse - 4683 km - Alert - 4060 km United States - Boston - 648 km - New York - 954 km - Washington - 1280 km - Miami - 2637 km - Chicago - 1881 km - Denver - 3317 km - Los Angeles - 4655 km Rest of World - Mexico City - 4309 km - Buenos Aires - 8962 km - London - 4635 km - Moscow - 6607 km - Cape Town - 12,164 km - Beijing - 10,476 km - Perth - 18,432 km Perth is pretty much as close as you can get to being the antipode of Moncton. One thing that I have been fascinated about for some time is that the most direct route to Perth from Moncton is north, almost directly over the North Pole..... :haha: |
Why do I love reading these so much? :haha:

I like to use Google's Distance Measurement Tool to get distances between points, just more visual:
http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5544/9...c3690915_b.jpg googleMapsDistance by franktko1, on Flickr I found out that I could travel over 1900 km and still be in Quebec! Going west, the same distance would take me past Winnipeg, south to Daytona Beach in Florida and some 300 km past St John's in the sea going east... |
Very cool. Ours isn't quite as far. From our southernmost to northernmost point (which, BTW, is on a tiny island that Newfoundland and Nunavut share part of):

I'm so excited Denscity is coming. There's little I love more than showing someone around on their first time here. It's fun even if it's not their first, like with SurrealPlaces. But if it's their first, I just love it. I LOVE seeing what they notice, what makes them say, "Wow!", what makes them say, "That's kinda sad...", etc.

We cling to whatever separates us like we have clung to this God forsaken rock. ;-)

These days it's "Thank God we're surrounded by Oil", yet I think people still would like a fixed link if it were possible.

A great thread! I love geeky things like this, although was sad it couldn't find my home town back in England.
