Waukegan

Waukegan - there is only one.

North of Chicago on the shores of Lake Michigan, my hometown.

In no particular order ....

I passed through Waukegan about 10 years ago, checking out the downtown area. Looks about the same as I remember. Hope you post some more pics sometime. Thanks for the mini-tour.

Chandler's was a real institution in both Evanston and Highland Park for many years. I didn't even know they ever had a store in Waukegan.

The first time I came to Chicago I stopped by Waukegan to visit my brother. Nice little town. He took me to some bodegas looking store that was sort of like a head shop but with no pipes and stuff. I really liked the little theater. I still have a picture from the lake I took there hanging on at my desk at work.

Waukegan. . . my old stomping grounds when I got sick of Kenosha. . . both cities of equal misery that noone would miss if they'd be swallowed into the Earth. . .

Power

A mile or so from where I grew up - the coal fired ComEd plant always provided a backdrop for my views. In the winter the soot from the plant would settle on the fallen snow - leaving clear dark lines in the snowbanks where it had settled between snows.

When I drove down with my wife in 2009 to take some of these we were quickly pulled over by security - the personable guard said there was nothing he could do about us taking photos from the public road - they just wanted to make sure we weren't terrorists. Totally different feel and experience than we had just had at the Zion (nuke) plant.

Rail

A very big train yard provided a big part of my playground as a kid - a rich source of 1/2 burnt flares, a great place to flatten pennies. These shots are from Aug of 2013

Waukegan

My hometown too. From 1952 to 1975. It has changed ALOT since then.

I still will go to Louie's and the Quonset Hut when I happen to be going past.

Sure do miss those cheese bombers!!

^ What the hell's up with the animosity?

Waukegan is one of Chicagoland's most diverse suburbs, and actually has a large number of non-Mexican hispanic immigrants.

Kenosha isn't quite as diverse, but it has a nice waterfront, a decent downtown, the streetcar, some TOD relating to the streetcar, and some good Italian food. Oh, and of course a Metra stop.

Not sure what's so "miserable" about them.

It kind of reminds me of a little city in my local region in western, PA minus the hills or northeastern Ohio. I used to live in the Chicago in Downers Grove but never got to visit Waukegan since I only lived there for a short period of time due to health problems but I was near it driving up to Milwaukee.

I've always wanted to stop here! On my way from Duluth/Superior to Chicago I always go past Waukegan, which looks a lot like Superior, WI lakefront. I love my Great Lakes cities!

I'll have to make a stop by sometime when spring arrives and take some photos!

and it's not an inconsequential county either. lake county, illinois is 444 square miles with ~703,000 people (3rd most in illinois after cook and dupage).

most of it is pretty forgettable sprawl, but there are some real places like waukegan mixed in here and there.

hipster duck Dec 21, 2017 11:24 PM

Interesting. Until I saw the Metra locomotives, I thought this town was somewhere completely different: on the eastern coast of Lake Michigan in Michigan itself.

I always thought that the suburban towns along Lake Michigan to the north of Chicago were rich, as if it was the Westchester County of Chicagoland, or something like that.

Nice set Harry-looks like a great place to grow up-lots of great memories.
