Calling all St. John's forumers, CBC wants our help!

Very exciting news, everyone!

We've all been following CBC's exciting Newburbia feature, which explores how our fine city is expanding. Now they want us to be a part of it!

Remember the Live Chat the Mayors of Paradise and Torbay did?

They want us to do, basically, the same thing. The session won't be broadcast live and won't have questions from the public, but will instead be recorded and then posted along with all the other Newburbia content on CBC's website.

A CBC host would throw out a few questions to get us going, but what they really want to get is a conversation/debate between all of us, people who have an interest and some knowledge about how the city is developing and ideas about what we can do better.

Our overall theme will be: Newburbia: The way to go or urban sprawl?

The date for the recording is Thursday, October 4, at 5:45 p.m..

So, who's interested? If you are, post, let us know, and we'll get everything arranged over the course of this thread.

Please note we now have a confirmed time and date. There is SOME flexibility but this is CBC's preference.

AND you can participate using only your SSP username, without identifying your real name, if you wish.

So how will this work? Will CBC website be hosting the discussion or will it be a new thread on the forum? It seems to be like our everyday discussions here on the forum... is this correct?

SignalHillHiker Oct 3, 2012 4:42 PM

It'll be on CBC's site and, yeah, it'll be pretty much what we usually do - but in real-time, ha!

Sorry, another question - How long will the discussion be, 30 mins, 1 hour?

SignalHillHiker Oct 3, 2012 5:42 PM

They haven't specified - I suppose they'd like whatever naturally occurs.

jeddy1989 Oct 3, 2012 6:15 PM

oh noooooo :( :( I would really like to participate however I have an apointment at 6 pm :(
What are the other time options? are there any?

SignalHillHiker Oct 3, 2012 6:18 PM

I assume during business hours could be difficult for most people? We can do it Friday, October 5 as well.

What do other people think?

When you say they want us to do the same thing, I'm a bit confused. Are CBC Hosts questioning us? Are we questioning the Mayor's of Paradise and Torbay? Are we questioning each other? Is it specific to Paradise and Torbay, or the Avalon in general?

I'm certainly interested.

EDIT: Oh, and in regards to time, Thursday would be my preference as I am flying home to NS Friday night for Thanksgiving. That being said do not book around me as I am not 100% sure of my participation. Just throwing it out there.

jeddy1989 Oct 3, 2012 6:26 PM

Ok I'm good with the 4th I made arrangements :) so it's the 4th of October at 5:45 PM?

SignalHillHiker Oct 3, 2012 6:38 PM

Thursday is also CBC's preference, so they'll LOVE that.

It's just going to be us, whoever wants to participate here, and the CBC host. The host is going to get us started with a few questions, and then we take it from there amongst ourselves. I'm sure they'll pop in with follow-up questions, etc. but the objective is to get us discussing/debating together.

What should I wear?

Kidding of course. Sounds fun.

statbass Oct 3, 2012 6:44 PM

Sounds good to me, I'm in as well. I'll put a reminder in my phone ;)

SignalHillHiker Oct 3, 2012 6:44 PM

Hahaha, awesome. This is going to be great!

So that's four of us so far. I'll edit the main post.

Copes Oct 3, 2012 6:54 PM

Don't put me down as a sure thing, I very much want to participate but I'm not 100% sure if I'll be able to.

I'm a maybe, I'll keep you informed.

No problem...

Guys, did we want to discuss some ground rules amongst ourselves first? Like...

We shouldn't direct a follow-up question to a specific one of us in case that person doesn't want to/doesn't have an answer, but should keep it open-ended and turn it back to the group. Like, "Sorry, SignalHillHiker, I don't agree. I think X, Y, and Z. What do the rest of you think?" rather than, "What do you think?"

I agree we shouldn't direct questions towards each other specifically. I think we should keep it as an open discussion, jump in with a comment if you feel. I guess we should keep the same structure as forum posts.

As well, I think it'd be great if we could drum up a few more people. Right now there are 3 yes and 1 maybe. More involvement=more discussion, as of now I think it may be hard to generate much discussion with only three or four people.

SignalHillHiker Oct 3, 2012 9:14 PM

I'm sure we can do it if all four of us show up, but yes, we definitely need more people. Come on, St. John's! :D

Architype Oct 3, 2012 11:13 PM

Sounds exciting - good luck guys, it shouldn't be too difficult (just go over your mental notes first lol).
Unfortunately, some of us are living too far away to participate.

Just thought I'd throw this in, an article which might provoke some thought -
