Thankyou!!

Love every single picture on this. It's interesting how Old John is actually more wide known, or at least, more famous or talked about within chicagoans than Sears. It must be the location, because its Magnificent, this building is so plain, yet so interesting. It defines the north part of the skyline IMO. This building will always be loved by Chicagoans and people who visit Chicago, I love it, and it also has the best observation deck the city has or ever will. I wonder when a major renovation could happen? Anyway, thankyou for the VERY NEEDED thread, so we can discuss Old John, and learn something, because till today, im still learing about one of my favorite buildings in the chi.:notacrook: :notacrook:

Dark, ominous, and quite possibly the world's perfect skyscraper...

I agree.
My fantasy is a 200-story version of it.

One of the best skyscrapers of all times. One of the first skyscrapers to make me love architecture.

I'll take some pictures when I get the penthouse. =P

I've always wondered about the discussions that went into designing it with the double antennae. And of course they were red and white striped for years and years.

Aleks Jul 3, 2008 10:20 PM

I like the double antennas. They make the building look cool and complete. Both white and red+white antennas look good too. They should change it every dozen or so years. Imo.

This building is a perfection of its school of architecture. You cannot get anything more perfectly modern and powerful (and expressive of its structure) than this building. Every single part of the design serves a purpose, yet retains an artistic, forceful, flare. This is easily my favorite building on the planet...

Fabb Jul 8, 2008 6:25 PM

It was even beautiful under construction. At that time, it must have been hyper-dominant in the skyline.

from an early pamphlet for the observatory.

I love this building. With its unique construction it's unmistakable and dominant, even as other buildings in the area grow towards it. And its on the Mile, looking down on the lake. 'Nuff said.

Thanks for the pics.

I really wish they would put the red and white striped antennae back up.

SNT1 Jul 9, 2008 12:14 AM

yeah, Agreed with people here. Definitely one of the greatest skyscrapers ever built

This day in age with the tech we have now, using the current shape of the original structure and engineering, I am sure it is technically feasible without a doubt.

I see what you are seeing in the before and after pics. It looks like the father tree and its young saplings yearning for the sun in the guidance [all looking in with admiration] and protection from their paternal protector.

I'm sorry to break up this love fest...but i've just never understood the attraction to this building:shrug: Was it groundbreaking in it's time or something?
