Yonge-Dundas Square somehow manages to be uglier than Times Square, make it stop.

Centropolis Dec 8, 2017 5:01 PM

toronto is toronto-ing

Crawford Dec 8, 2017 5:27 PM

Toronto is the world capital of derivative "we are a major Western city" striving.

My thoughts are if Toronto is going to permit large, garish signage and huge video screens, its better that it's all concentrated in one area like Yonge and Dundas rather than spread all over the downtown -- and since Yonge and Dundas has long been Toronto's epicentre of in-your-face consumerism, they might as well go all out. I say bring on more screens!

Doady Dec 8, 2017 10:10 PM

Yonge-Dundas Square is a private space. It's more to do with big business than Toronto.

Gresto Dec 8, 2017 11:14 PM

Jeez, I haven't been to Yonge/Dundas in ages. That is a horrid onslaught of visual pollution and consumerist indoctrination.

Dundas Square has always been garish.

Agree 100%. What we're seeing is just the natural evolution of this part of downtown. It's always been full of loud obnoxious over the top commercialism. I'm glad they didn't attempt to sanitize it. Bigger screens? Bring it on.

Torontopia is attempting to satisfy Crawford's Toronto obsession.

In fact, dundas Square and its advertising display predates Times Square by several decades. As usual, ignorant Americans took credit for something that was an originally Canadian idea.

Innsertnamehere Dec 10, 2017 6:33 PM

The modern Dundas Square is ver much so modelled after its New York companion. It wasn't even a square until 2002. The Yonge Street strip has long had advertising but Times Square has had it far longer.

That, or you should have a /s at the end of your post..

Cultural appropriation! :haha:

SSP member FrAnKs posted a cool new video of him driving down Yonge street from the 401 to Front Street, it really shows how the character of Yonge street changes once you pass Bloor street and head into the downtown core.
