Oh, man. London is great. One of my favorite cities anywhere. I need to return! But, please, we can do without the self-depreciating "I'm not a photographer; I only use a p&s camera, blah blah" stuff. :)

I'm from self-depreciating Canada in self-depreciating England - that's asking a bit much. ;)

I've been to London a couple times but didn't get a great feel for the city aside from the fact that it's both massive and impressive.

Friends of mine who have spent a lot of time there or are from there generally have a low opinion of the city. They're not terribly specific, they just say it's sh*t. I've always found this peculiar.

What's your opinion of the city and why do you think people might not like it?

Yeah, there is definitely quite a bit of that here. Most of the people I've met like to complain about it, a few were even baffled as to why I'd leave Toronto for London. No idea why (bleak weather perhaps?), but the British can be a rather self-depreciating bunch. The lack of civic self-esteem isn't quite as dire as it is in Toronto, but Londoners often still seem to at least look up to their peer cities (New York, Paris, etc). And while it is true that it's not as visually impressive as some of those, I'd say it's a lot more interesting and exciting (and generally more "livable", too). Aside from the shit weather, the only notable problem I have with the city is the surprising pedestrian-unfriendliness. Still though, easily one of my favourite cities in the world (and objectively, one of the "greatest").

Coming from a Londoner the reason we moan about the place is mostly the prices, what you get for your buck is half that outside the city. Great place to visit, something else entirely when youre saving up 3 lifetimes for the average $785,000 property (yes, really http://www.guardian.co.uk/money/2013...prices-rockets) in a crap area, and the smallest housing in the West - 25% smaller even than the Japanese. Basically the population's growing alarmingly to a tune of 85,000 -100,000 each year in a city already at over-capacity, with demand far outstripping supply when it comes to housing - this of course effects all other prices. Also why so much of the place is under construction for new homes, offices and transport.

But hey, let's not whinge... I may be technically homeless but the city offers all that a city can in arts, history, entertainment and people. This is in order to MR :cheers:
