Flushing, Queens, June 2013

Here are some photos I took on a hot day yesterday in Flushing, Queens, a large Chinese/Korean neighborhood 45 minutes or so from Manhattan on the 7 train. When I'm stuck in the NY area but craving something exotic, I sometimes take the train here. I have no proof, but from my travels and general knowledge, I suspect Flushing might be the largest urban Asian neighborhood in the world outside of Asia.

First up, a large Dim Sum restaurant also commonly used for Chinese-American weddings.

Then a Korean bakery down the street. I'd put the demographics of the walkable part of Flushing as something like 80% Chinese and 20% Korean. Perhaps skewing even more Chinese. The bulk of the Korean areas are in a little Korean Village 20 minutes walk from Main Street Flushing, near the LIRR station, and in car oriented parts of Queens I'm less familiar with.

Typical building one block from the main street. The block length is quite long though, kind of like a Manhattan avenue block, with lots of shops and restaurants on the side streets in between.

A large foodcourt in what I think is called the New World Mall. This is the largest and newest mall in Flushing. There were plans to build an even larger mixed use retail/commercial/residential development on a very large municipal parking lot, but the plans seem to have stalled out.

Wow, amazing. I love Flushing... almost as much as I love your view!

Holy shit @ that view!

The Torontonians are coming in 3, 2, 1...

Seriously, though, what a fantastic thread. I love Flushing. Coming up out of the subway there is really transporting.

Great tour! I didn't get a chance to visit Flushing on my NY trip last year, but it definitely looks like a fascinating place. Nice bustle, urbanity, food, and energy.

The larger development you're referring to is called Flushing Commons, and is being developed by Rockefeller Development.

It's breaking ground this September.

Flushing Commons will have the largest mall in Flushing, though will be mostly residential, and with a large hotel. It's kind of unique for Flushing in that the lead developer is a blue-chip Manhattan firm, and not the more local immigrant-based developers (though they have Chinese partners).

It's always great to see the other boroughs! Thanks for posting.
Of course, your corner view of Manhattan isn't bad either!

Nice set and your view is badass.

Both Flushing and Brighton Beach are incredible neighborhoods - both are more vibrant than the core of many other American cities and they aren't located anywhere near Manhattan. Its these type of neighborhoods that made me realize the scope of NYC's urbanity.

Great pics of Flushing and Brighton Beach.

I wonder if I've been to that Georgian restaurant? I love Georgian food, and have been to a couple of Brighton Beach Georgian restaurants.

I'm a big fan of both Georgian and Uzbecki food, with the Georgian options very good in Brooklyn Russian areas, and the Uzbecki options good in Queens Russian areas.

The Georgian restaurant in the photos is called Pirosmani. It was not bad! I might have actually prefered another Georgian restaurant in Brooklyn called Mtskheta Cafe. But to be honest I'm not any kind of expert on Georgian food. The area around Pirosmani seems more interesting though. There's a good Turkish restaurant frequented by Russian speakers not far away, and also an Uzbek restaurant which I passed but didn't yet try. The only Uzbek place I've tried in NY is a Bukharian Jewish restaurant out in Queens on the R train. It was ok, very local, filled with Russian speaking (I presume Bukharian) families, and reminded me of Uzbek Tatar home cooking I've had in the former Soviet Union.
