top 10 that define your country?

top 10 building, structure, monument, or anything man-made that defines your country!

Yes, it is extremely hard to narrow it down to just 10. but lets give it a shot:D

in the good old US of A:
no particular order.

1) Statue of Liberty
2) Empire State Building
3) Mount Rushmore
4) Sears Tower
5) Golden Gate Bridge
6) U.S. Capitol Building
6) Gateway Arch
7) Chrysler Building
8) Hoover Dam
9) The White House
10) Brooklyn Bridge

there you go...
it was very hard and difficult, but thats what i came out with.:)

Now it is your turn to showcase your country's most famous!!!!

Patrick Feb 27, 2008 7:01 AM

Oh my, another one of these, well I'll participate this time:

(No order)

Empire State Building & Chrysler Building, New York City
Even people who live in America get the two confused, many see the Chrysler Building as the Empire State Building, so its reasonable to include them as one symbol.
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi..._slonecker.jpg

Golden Gate Bridge, San Francisco
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...Bridge-001.jpg

Space Needle, Seattle
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...dleQAClose.jpg

Gateway Arch, St. Louis
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...teway_Arch.jpg

Mount Rushmore, North Dakota
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...t_Rushmore.jpg

The Mall, Washington D.C.
People still get the White House and Capitol House mixed up, so its reasonable to count Washington D.C.'s landmarks as a whole.
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...WhiteHouse.jpg

Statue of Liberty, New York City
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi..._Liberty_2.JPG

Hollywood Sign, Los Angeles
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...gn_%281%29.jpg

Las Vegas Casinos, Las Vegas
Not one hotel could symbolize a country, but an entire city of them could.
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...egas_Strip.jpg

Brooklyn Bridge, New York City
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi..._York_City.jpg

It just isnt complete without:

World Trade Center, New York city

I'll refrain from listing for Canada, as any building in Canada has a much stronger association to the city than country for me, even the Parliament Buildings. Put it up to rampant regionalism or something like that. I've always felt that Canada has adopted natural features as the preeminent symbols of our country anyway.

For the US:
Statue of Liberty
White House
US Capital
Gateway Arch
Kennedy Space Centre
Mount Rushmore
Possibly Empire State Building, though I think of it more as a symbol of New York than the US.

No Shard or gherkin?

muppet Nov 21, 2012 5:49 PM

Ah no, I think theyre only famous or definitive in forums like ours really. Many peeps outside the city itself don't even know they exist, let alone find them iconic :(. Give it another few centuries of exposure and people might just come round to the idea of modern architecture, that isn't the local Tesco. Possibly.

The only one that's managed to buck the trend is the London Eye, thanks to the fact they hold the main New Year's Eve fireworks off it. The other emblematic piece that everyone in the country knows about is the Millennium Dome/ North Greenwich Arena, but only for the PR disaster that hounded it. I might also add the Olympic Stadium pretty much stamped on everyone's forehead this year, but the logistical problem see, is that it's shit. So I won't.
