It's excavation at this point. Once we show foundation work, I'll move this to Supertall Construction.

Speaking of he spire, I'm wondering why it is only 100 ft. in height. I would think that a spire (being a finishing point on a design) could at least be one fourth the height of the structure and be very nicely proportioned. This formula would have made the spire 250 ft. to bring the total height to 1,250 ft. From previous designs and city approval the building could have been 1,200 ft. What difference does it make--none really. Just silly and childish bragging rites. "Mine is bigger than yours" type thing. Just look at China and the Middle east to verify this point. But, fact remains Los Angeles has had the tallest building West of Chicago since 1973, and there are still plans for the Transbay Terminal tower in San Francisco to be very tall.

Yeah, except from 1982 to 1990.

You must either be from Houston or like it very much. No malice...just an impression. But you are correct.

Hopefully the ones in Miami and San Francisco get going soon so that will no longer be the case.

I know this sounds superficial, but on a clear day and/or evening I can see the US Bank tower from either a high spot on the 210 freeway in Glendora and ascending Kellogg Hill in San Dimas on the 57 south. Both vantage points are about 30 miles away. What an incredible site! I hope the the New Grand tower has a powerful beacon on its spire.

^ It's gonna be an amazing view seeing it from all the way out here. :)

^ Still a lot of old underground infrastructure to get rid of.

shakman Jul 11, 2013 3:52 PM

Demo of the previous structure's foundation may take some time. I wonder how far down is this foundation.

Was the hotel on a floating foundation or used caissons?

Most of that structure they are demolishing now is the old underground parking from what I heard. Can anyone confirm?

Either way, im interested in how this huge slab foundation for the new tower works. Will it be secured to bedrock or simply a floating block? its a football field in size and 20ft thick...i suppose simply the weight of that may make it secure.

they are making major headway with the underground garage. it should be completely gone very shortly. Lots of trucks on site as of 15 minutes ago (10 pm local time)

Yackemflaber69 Jul 25, 2013 5:49 PM

have they hit bedrock yet?

atlantaguy Jul 28, 2013 11:55 PM

Metro Matt is just pissed it won't be in Houston.

It's a beautiful design, and perfect for L.A.
