I believe that in many cases in Quebec, a stale baguette is used as the weapon. :D

Quebec City is at 3. We are getting close to Montréal in actual numbers.

We had another murder a couple of weeks ago. Again in Limoilou.

They caught the guy who did it. It was a punch and it happened on May 17.

Darkoshvilli Jun 7, 2014 10:54 AM

There was a fatal shooting a couple of blocks from where I live a few hours ago. The city now has 9 homicides.

drizzo_613 Jun 7, 2014 7:03 PM

Although this is pretty much normal news for the market, I'm surprised it doesn't turn fatal more often.

Last night. Double stabbing. 1 fatal.

Same night, couple blocks down. multiple stabbings. none fatal.
http://www.cfra.com/news/2014/06/07/...le-to-hospital

think thats 3 for ottawa and 3 for gatineau.

Oliver May Jun 7, 2014 9:02 PM

Your link for the Ottawa murder doesn't seem to be working.

Here is the CBC's story.

http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/ottawa...bing-1.2668284

That means Ottawa and Québec City are both on 3 for 2014.
Montreal is now at 9, Toronto at 19 according to Toronto Police Services.

Moncton is at 3, too. Their first murders since 2010. Not good.

drizzo_613 Jun 7, 2014 10:18 PM

Wierd. Both links seem to work for me.

There was a 3rd stabbing last night a few blocks away on Sandy hill area. Almost fatal. Busy night for cops.

Death in North River leaves residents on edge

Quote:

Residents of the Town of North River in Conception Bay North have been shocked with revelations of a suspicious death of a neighbour June 29, but lack of communication with the RCMP has left some locals concerned for their safety.

The Trinity Conception RCMP detachment received a call just before 4 a.m. about an incident in the town of just over 550 (2011 census). When officers arrived at the home on North River Road, the man was suffering from serious injuries. He later died from those injuries.

Although information has not been released on the cause of death, neighbours said the man had been stabbed. This has not been confirmed by police.

The Compass has learned the man is originally from Port de Grave and resided in North River, is in his early 40s and is the father of two young children.

Those who know the victim described him as quiet and likeable, although it’s been learned the man has had some turmoil in his life recently.

Meanwhile, the incident sent shockwaves through the region Sunday, with social media humming with speculation about what may have led to such a violent incident in an otherwise quiet community.

As of 5 p.m., there was no word from officers about an arrest, or if a suspect or suspects had been identified.

Although there has been a heavy police presence in the area, residents said they have not been updated on the situation. Some have also said not knowing who or why the death happened has left them on edge.

“Has the guy been caught? We have no idea,” said one resident, who asked not to be named. “I wish (the RCMP) would just tell us if we have anything to worry about.”

RCMP officers on site said they were unaware of any of the specifics on the case, and could not provide any details.

Calls to the Trinity Conception RCMP detachment Sunday evening were not returned.

Montreal is at 16, 7 of them were commited in June.

I think the residents of North River need to relax and understand that the RCMP can't answer all their questions during the middle of an investigation. All will come to light in due time. As stated by the police:

"Police cannot confirm reports that the man had been stabbed. Hicks says residents of North River have to trust that police are actively working on the case, and they don't want to jeopardise(sic....yeah VOCM, great job editing your articles) their investigation by releasing details until it is complete."

One media station (can't remember which) did mention that the police have increased their presence at a location known to be frequented by some unnamed biker gang in the area, so I would assume it isn't a random crime.

SignalHillHiker Jun 30, 2014 2:31 PM

I agree for the most part. People need to understand that the RCMP is a federal police force, the officers likely aren't local, and you won't have the same level of comfortable community knowledge or interaction that the RNC provides in urban areas. It's like having the FBI as your small-town police force in the U.S. Things are handled differently.

Generally, if there's reason for the public to be worried, the RCMP will make an announcement ASAP. We've seen that in the past. So the fact it hasn't happened this time, makes me suspect there isn't a reasonable reason for people who aren't involved (and already know it) to worry.

Marty_Mcfly Jun 30, 2014 2:38 PM

Exactly. People like to criticize the police force and how they handle things, but there have been many botched homicide cases in the province in the past it's much easier and safer to keep tight lipped on these things. If there's a threat to public safety (like say during their manhunt for Phillip Pynn) the police will let you know ASAP. Otherwise just let the big boys do their job.

Victoria Henneberry, 28, and Blake Leggette, 26, of Halifax are charged with first-degree murder in the death of the 26-year-old Saint Mary's University student.

Early Tuesday, Judge Anne Derrick excluded everyone from the court for a voir dire, including the Saunders family and media. Only Legette, Henneberry, the lawyers and sheriffs were allowed to stay.

A voir dire is a trial within a trial where lawyers discuss points of law and the admissibility of evidence.

The trial will resume today with a decision on whether the information discussed will be allowed as evidence.

Senior Crown attorney Christine Driscoll said outside court she expects to call 15 police and civilian witnesses to testify.

Saskatoon is at 5. There was also a homicide just outside of city limits that is not counted due to the location it took place.

Thunder Bay is at five as of last week, four natives got into a fight in a bush near Walmart (which is our largest tent city at the moment, and is periodically cleared out by police but always reappears) which ended with one of them getting killed and set on fire. The fourth homicide occurred on Canada Day in front of city hall, three natives got into a fight and one died of the injuries several days later. I think we've only had one homicide involving a white person this year. I think there was one a few weeks before that where a couple got into a fight at home and the woman was killed, but I honestly don't keep track of homicides anymore.

Statcan released its crime report for 2013 yesterday, Thunder Bay is in the top ten for total crime and second after Winnipeg for violent crime. Cities from Prince George through to Thunder Bay are experiencing similar problems with addictions, homelessness and crime among aboriginal people but there is no national or regional initiative to really deal with it. The best we've got in Thunder Bay is increased city funding for the homeless shelter and a plea from the mayor for First Nations leaders to "do more".

For the most part, First Nations do what they can but are restricted by how the federal government funds them. A bottomless money pit to buy bottled water is OK but if you want to build an addictions treatment centre, too fucking bad.

Winnipeg is currently at 13 homicides after the stabbing of a 37 year old woman on Salter Ave last week.

Would be pretty nuts if Calgary finished the year with more murders than Montreal. We have 16 so far.
