A journey along the Lena river, Eastern Siberia
Here are some pics I took during summer 2016, while doing a river cruise along the Lena river, the easternmost of the three great siberian rivers.
This long river (4,472 km, 11th in the world) crosses the Sakha Republic (also known as Yakutia), one of the most sparsely populated region of Russia (0.31 inh./km² or 0.80/sq mi). On this map (sorry for the mercator projection), you can see in yellow the route I took : http://i.imgur.com/dBvSrkI.png Other colours are for my other trips from previous years. I've already made, here on SSP, some threads about my trips in 2010, 2011 and 2015. Just look up my profile if you are interested. So before the pics, let's start by a video I made. It's like a trailer for this thread : Now some pics of Yakutsk, the capital city of Sakha Republic, and its port on the river : 1- https://i.imgur.com/KcKDnk8.jpg 2- https://i.imgur.com/TfKlB6A.jpg 3- https://i.imgur.com/9JU8Qxo.jpg 4- https://i.imgur.com/dEO6t49.jpg 5- https://i.imgur.com/s8nVyxr.jpg 6- https://i.imgur.com/GESiI8y.jpg 7- All buildings are built on stilts because of permafrost : https://i.imgur.com/2P5W6Jv.jpg 8- And all the pipes are built above ground : https://i.imgur.com/vS07dsS.jpg 9- https://i.imgur.com/09oD8Wb.jpg 10- Here is the port of Yakutsk, located 1,500 km inland from the Arctic Ocean : https://i.imgur.com/UhQZYBv.jpg 11- https://i.imgur.com/Iep90u1.jpg 12- https://i.imgur.com/eAUCk8f.jpg 13- https://i.imgur.com/MJRDSdx.jpg 14- https://i.imgur.com/s6tlS7t.jpg 15- A ferry, to cross the river (there isn't any single bridge on the Lena river) : https://i.imgur.com/BQuLvRO.jpg 16- https://i.imgur.com/iR8yasp.jpg 17- Going south to the spectacular Lena pillars : https://i.imgur.com/bsl9bwA.jpg 18- https://i.imgur.com/xuAsBQl.jpg 19- https://i.imgur.com/KDTARNN.jpg 20- Here is our ship : https://i.imgur.com/1SUAZnP.jpg 21- She's named after a famous Russian poet, Mikhail Svetlov : https://i.imgur.com/PM9lCwY.jpg 22- https://i.imgur.com/Vbscns6.jpg 23- https://i.imgur.com/B9PmymP.jpg 24- https://i.imgur.com/Dl2NewL.jpg 25- https://i.imgur.com/eyV5i5p.jpg 26- Our ship and a sister ship (in the foreground), anchored to the shore : https://i.imgur.com/B4IoDaE.jpg 27- https://i.imgur.com/W2Uzt0F.jpg 28- https://i.imgur.com/78bChXN.jpg 29- https://i.imgur.com/LMxrfLh.jpg 30- https://i.imgur.com/U03DQyV.jpg 31- https://i.imgur.com/mpY5hcS.jpg 32- https://i.imgur.com/58B6G9g.jpg 33- https://i.imgur.com/6LTAUvt.jpg 34- https://i.imgur.com/8ZUNeuj.jpg To be continued. |
wow this is great.
i think the first impression is that it looks a lot warmer around there than expected given siberia's reputation. given my own visit to central asia and the old soviet union i wonder if the zara city mall is the real zara or a bootleg version? lol. the first photo of the lena pillars in particular is just stunning. other views resemble the palisades here around nyc. my neighbor took a trip across siberia when he was younger, so i have actually heard about these places -- what an adventure! more to come i hope?! |
Thank you. My kind of thread.

And, as the ship was going north, down the river to its mouth and the Arctic Ocean, there were less and less trees, as we were going from taiga to tundra, and small pockets of snow started to appear. 35- https://i.imgur.com/8P2iPYr.jpg 36- Reintroduced buffalos : https://i.imgur.com/9Tl3sLj.jpg 37- Abandoned tombstones : https://i.imgur.com/iT7ycbz.jpg 38- https://i.imgur.com/0FJSuep.jpg 39- https://i.imgur.com/IOOTamx.jpg 40- https://i.imgur.com/53o8Hbq.jpg 41- https://i.imgur.com/5WN2lOQ.jpg 42- https://i.imgur.com/452ZMaV.jpg 43- Mokhsogollokh (pop : 6,197) : https://i.imgur.com/7N4mmbn.jpg 44- https://i.imgur.com/oNzOCAt.jpg 45- https://i.imgur.com/62OgNNM.jpg 46- https://i.imgur.com/Zconmc0.jpg 47-Pokrovsk (pop : 9,102) : https://i.imgur.com/kxDIbmL.jpg 48- https://i.imgur.com/7jvdzKR.jpg 49- https://i.imgur.com/5l9mjOu.jpg 50- https://i.imgur.com/5QPBIsW.jpg 51- https://i.imgur.com/93TUsfO.jpg 52- https://i.imgur.com/KIztzgf.jpg 53- https://i.imgur.com/ALeshRr.jpg 54- https://i.imgur.com/opzxwRx.jpg 55- https://i.imgur.com/5wl0GRl.jpg 56- https://i.imgur.com/Suv7dox.jpg To be continued. |
Great pics! Had me on google for a while reading and checking out the city.
One quick question. I understand the buildings being built on stilts because of permafrost but the pipes above ground, I would have thought below ground would be better because of the insulation. |
holy fuck, this is my dream. i’m obsessed with central/northern deep-continental asia.

One of the more underexposed regions on the planet. Interesting place. I could only imagine how cold it is during the winter.

Thanks for the comments !

I'm not going to lie, the commieblocks are a shame of theirs, but their wild nature is splendid. It looks huge like Alaska. I like what you're doing here, Nantais. You're such a lucky dude for traveling like this. |
it kind of does look like alaska, funny thing.
i've flown over alaska and then down over siberia over the east siberian sea and from a plane, it looks like the same place. the same, squishy potholed coastline. |
The latest round of pictures definitely look more Alaska-like.
There is so much untouched acreage and future potential -- it's as if it's the final frontier. |
|
^And the sky. Huge.

Yes, Siberia and Russian Far East look like Alaska or Northern Canada. The fact that they are different countries shouldn't fool us about how they are strikingly similar : they share the same biotopes (taiga and tundra), very look-alike native cultures and the same history of colonization.
Actually it's not odd that Russian tried to colonize Alaska back in the 19th century, it was simply the logical next step to their conquest of the East. 77- The engines room : https://i.imgur.com/3EAr9n8.jpg 78- https://i.imgur.com/rXbozpg.jpg 79- https://i.imgur.com/AUFfrBx.jpg 80- https://i.imgur.com/NoXID7v.jpg 81- https://i.imgur.com/7X3rRlu.jpg 82- https://i.imgur.com/ltlJ89k.jpg 83- https://i.imgur.com/gjuyfcn.jpg |
