:previous: That looks almost the same height as the WFC.

Pandemonious Sep 29, 2006 2:05 AM

That is likely a massing model based on the ancient Daewoo Financial Center design, which was significantly shorter. The height for this new competition was proposed as 580m occupiable, allowing a crown/spire to reach taller.

I can't see how people really like Foster's design from that one image. It appears to be just a big boring prism thing..? Nothing original. KPF's while not bad, reminds me too much of a love child between the Complex Federation Tower in Moscow and the old Freedom Tower design. But, whatever.. to each his own..

In reality, we have all seen maybe one rendering of most of the towers. There is more to every proposal than one image I am sure. I suggest you all give the elevation-esque rendering of the SOM design I posted further down page one to show what I mean.

This is what's going up on that site. It's called the Shanghai International Finance Center. The two towers are 260m and 250m respectively. All in all the development is 4 million square feet making it the largest project UC in Shanghai.

The plot that Shanghai Center will eventually use is a driving range at the moment.

I see what you mean, but the SOM doesn't do it for me. It is nice, but IMO there are some of these proposals that have make more of an impact.

WonderlandPark Sep 29, 2006 2:43 AM

Gawd these are all damn tall. If it weren't for a little tower called the Burj Dubai, these would all be WTB proposals.

BrandonJXN Sep 29, 2006 3:26 AM

^ Even the worst tower looks better than the Burj.

Just about--according to the article the building is going to be somewhere between 560~580 meters. Craziness.

It will go on the driving range plot tucked behind the jin mao. It has long been planned to have a third super-tall there. One will go up eventually, but who knows if this will actually be it.
Those twins were originally going to be in the 350m range. THey are going to look tiny now if the third super-tall is as high as in most of these renderings. It's a shame as they are gorgeous!

By the way, look at the tiny Oriental Pearl Tower in this rendering. :haha:

And it is Kowloon at the background :jester:

Þróndeimr Sep 29, 2006 4:27 PM

Some really unique and mindblowing proposals here, will be very hard to choose a winner to that plot, as it will overrun SWFC!

After observing all those designs carefully, I agree. The SOM design is the best. The shape is simple and symetrical and beautiful, not some crazy, out-of-this-world geometry. The beatiful external bracing is going a give this tower a timeless touch and make it an instant landmark.

Some of the other designs look wonderful too, but they seem to be too ahead of our time. They look like they belong to StarWars and the geometry doesn't look like they're "build-able". The rest range from average to down right ugly.

starvinggryphon Sep 29, 2006 7:28 PM

Will this be in the running for World's Tallest Building......or not quite?

malec Sep 29, 2006 8:08 PM

^^ Not quite. If the burj wasn't being built it'd be cool to watch this and the russia tower go head to head for the WTB :)

Atlas Sep 29, 2006 9:57 PM

I really like the KPF design, I hope it wins.:worship: :worship:

A couple of those designs were really spectacular. I would be thrilled to get one of Shanghai's little projects, it would dwarf anything we have in Phoenix. What I really like about so many of China's buildings are the futuristic and unconventional designs that have become so common.

Cheers,

looks like he took two projects and stacked one on top of the other... I'm kinda curious to know who it was, and what his other work looks like.

dass this prodjekt has a hompage en a video animation yet ?

vincent Sep 30, 2006 7:44 PM

Okay guys, don't get too excited. The article clearly say NONE of the design from foreign firms get through the first phase of the selection process. (phase 1 of the selection process has 36 proposals, only 9 proposals get into phase 2, which are all chinese firm)

They are selecting the best of the Chinese proposals, to then compete against the foreign firms' proposals.
