It's a very exciting time to be living in London. If I didn't live in NY I'd want to live here!

Something in me sort of likes those absolutely brutal concrete towers that dot UK cities like the one in the first photo above.

Completely agree. And from living there for a few years, they 'worked' seeing them in person.

I don't feel bad when they implode them, but I also don't think they are a complete eyesore!

^Count me in as a brutalist lover as well. Guys Hospital next door though is really tough to love, its just plain bad.

I absolutely love seeing SHARD in big letters on the core form work.

Can't wait to see how high it will be by the end of summer. Perhaps the core will be topped out when its time for me to see it in person again.

I can see the shard rising from my apartment block (I have outstanding views across the capital) and it really is going up fast. Core must be about 300ft high at the moment. I still find it hard to visualise how the final tower will fit in though - the actual site is very small. The future is coming...

Ditto. I think "Orwell" when I see them and they provide great contrast to modern master pieces such as this GORGEOUS tower now under construction. Hats off to you London!

That's not just a fancy sign going up, that's a slip mold. It's a triple deck scaffold that rises as they pour concrete. The top decks they set the rebar into place and the bottom deck is where they pour. I've been on one before.

That's not just a fancy sign going up, that's a slip mold. It's a triple deck scaffold that rises as they pour concrete. The top deck is where they set the rebar and molding into place. The middle deck is where they pour. The bottom deck is where they release the molding and do finishing work.

As for how fast the rising, that's about typical for a slip mold. They'll rise a couple of feet a day.

I've been on one before in Pueblo, CO. They were building silos for a concrete smelter.

Amazing building... shoulda changed one letter in the name though.

The Shard is one of the most beautiful skyscrapers U/C in the world right now, imo. Its great to witness the beginning of a new era in the London skyline.

Everytime I see the word Shard though, I cant help thinking of 'Shart'.. hahah. Kinda wish they would've named the building that instead.. would be hilarious. (For those of you that know what Shart means).... :haha:
