Walt Disney Concert Hall

Frank Gehry's Walt Disney Concert Hall (home of the LA Philharmonic) turns 10 years old this month. This seems to be a powerful, iconic building and I imagine that it has done a lot for downtown Los Angeles.

It would be interesting to hear thoughts on this building and get more pictures. Lots of good links can be found at The Concert Hall as a Civic Icon by Timothy Judd.

Gorgeous building, his best work to be honest.

Even if it is a total copy of the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao.

I agree. I think he refined what he did in Bilbao with Disney. I've never seen it in person, but judging by the pictures it looks like an incredibly moving building. He also insists that he designs buildings "from the inside out" which runs counter to what most people assume.

Well, except for the little fact that the Disney Hall was designed first.

This building has many small little nuances on the outside that are not apparent from the street in any way. The fact that you can 'explore' the facade on multiple levels all the way around makes it extremely unique.

The building was an instant icon for Los Angeles and very well recieved here that you'd think it would spur more creative civic-minded architecture in Los Angeles but thus far hasn't. 10 years in and we're still writing in a lot of our public spaces and institutions. Anyway, definitely one of my favorite buildings in Los Angeles for sure. The inside of the hall is gorgeous as well.

How available is this building to the people of L.A... does it get used often? I like the complexity of this building, and yet it seems so simple.

blech. On the other hand, crumpled tinfoil never looked better.

Here are my photos of the building, unfortunately I do not have any of the main theater interior:
