I remember hearing that the foundation for this was completed years ago, and it just needs to be dug up. Whats the story on that?

On the plus side it's not immediately near too many tall buildings so it'll stick out. Glad another 500+ footer will be U/C soon.

This originally was a twin tower project, the second tower didn't pull through...

I think you are correct the foundation was completed when 540 W Madison was built. 540 was going to have a twin.

It's over 500'. It's simple, but I agree, it's rinse, wash, and repeat in many ways.

If this project is already about to get started, I'm imagining they are doing this on spec? Also, I wonder if they've signed with a hotel flag?

The fact that people are questioning that this project should have its own dedicated thread just speaks to Chicago's mightiness.

I do agree, though, that with the last boom (1999-2007) a project like this would not have qualified. I believe that our cut off back in those days was 700 feet?

I would love a return to those days, when so many tall projects were being built.

Still, with the current boom I think the designs are getting better. As others have discussed, it's nice to see far less beige concrete crap getting thrown up everywhere.

this boom is just getting started, I feel like it could easily be as big as the last considering we have what... 3 potential supertalls? Only Trump got built last boom.

I felt the same way at first but the roof deck is pretty cool, 582' is nice for the area so it'll be a decent addition.

I honestly find it hard to get that excited about any Chicago project that isn't supertall though. This city has high standards. Part of me also finds it odd that a near 1500' building has existed since the 70's and people are still excited over buildings half or even a third of that height. They do add to the skyline but it would be nice to see Chi town step it up a little.

people aren't excited about the height of this one. people are excited for this one because yet another goddamn west loop surface parking lot is biting the dust! praise jeebus!

that part of town has been mercilessly swiss-cheesed by parking lots for my entire freaking life (born in '76) and things are now finally coming together to stitch the urban fabric back together to make it a cohesive extension of downtown. it doesn't matter if the buildings are 200' tall, 500' tall, or 1,000' tall. it's about rebuilding a forlorn and bombed-out section of the city with activity-generating development. a nearly 600' tall mixed-use building like this MORE than fits the bill.

Exactly, and this building will basically be the tallest building west of the river corridor by 100'+. We are talking about a nearly 600' building fronting Jefferson St. For the location this is a very significant project. That's not to mention the interesting hotel/office combo which I don't think we've ever seen built from scratch before in Chicago. Only conversions like the IBM building are hotel/office. The design, despite being Goettsch, is pretty interesting if only as a result of it's program.

I wonder if there's a provision for signage on the west face? This building is going to be very visible from the Kennedy.

And is there interior parking? If there is it doesn't look like much. So a net reduction in parking spaces?

They're probably expecting that many of the office tenants will have their workers come via Metra. The Loop Link will also be beneficial by giving hotel customers quicker access to the Loop and 'L' stations.
