Nice pics. We don't get much Scotland on SSP.
I'm honestly not a big Glasgow fan, but Edinburgh is probably my second favorite city in the the British Isles. Scotland, overall, is underrated (except for the food). |

Great pics! I've been to Glasgow (ironically a year ago today), but haven't made it to Edinburgh yet. One of these days I would love to see more of Scotland.

No modern buildings?
Sometimes in these older historic cities, there's a newer section somewhere out of the downtown core. Gee whiz! I haven't been to Glasgow or Edinburgh since 1989. |
Well, there are some parts of Glasgow that were torn down after WW2 to make space more modern accommodations. But to be honest that architecture is not exactly what I would consider to be noteworthy. I failed to visit some of the more recent architectural gems though.
There was an interesting plan to tear down virtually all of Glasgow in the wake of WW2. Thankfully they eventually dropped that proposal: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bruce_Report Glasgow: https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4288/3...23dde0ee_o.jpg Glasgow https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4231/3...3ba88556_o.jpg Glasgow Gallery of Modern Art https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4278/3...bc2cbea5_o.jpg Glasgow https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4279/3...436edda0_o.jpg Glasgow https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4282/3...78b28c77_o.jpg Glasgow Necropolis And something modern from Edinburgh...the Scottish parliament: https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4196/3...e77b7f50_o.jpg Holyrood Scottish Parliament https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4267/3...a3811b25_o.jpg Holyrood Scottish Parliament |

Great tour of two amazingly beautiful cities! Glasgow is very fortunate that the Bruce Plan was not fully implemented. That would have been a catastrophic loss of it's rich architectural heritage.

Nice pics. The Scottish cities have the most substantial architecture of any city in the British isles. Those tenements are solid piles of stone and their minimalist exteriors have aged very well. They're great on the inside too, with soaring ceilings, massive walls and bright bay windows. You get the sense that the Scots probably had some of the highest standards of living in the world around the year 1890.
Anyway, I have a soft spot for Glasgow which gives off a bit of a Victorian high tech vibe, with its Charles Rennie McIntosh architecture, glass arcades and giant shipbuilding cranes. It's probably the most steampunk city I can think of. The climate is just awful though. |
Nice pics! I visited Liverpool recently and it seems that Glasgow and Liverpool have their similarities.
