LOS ANGELES | 222 W. 2nd St | 616 FT | 56 FLOORS

I'm surprised this hasn't been posted here.

One of the more exciting proposals, and one that can change the Civic Center area.

Stacked, Boxy Tower to Rise in the Civic Center

Quote:

Since spinning off its struggling publishing division, Tribune Media Company has gone to work monetizing its national real estate portfolio.

The Chicago-based corporation made one of its first moves in Los Angeles last month by filing plans to redevelop a parking lot near the Los Angeles Times Building as a mixed-use tower. The proposed development, which would sit atop Metro's future 2nd/Broadway Station, calls for the construction of a 30-story building featuring 107 condominiums, 534,000 square feet of commercial offices and approximately 7,200 square feet of ground-level retail space.

A rendering of the building portrays it as a stack of boxy, offset masses with cantilevered sections that create canopies and terrace decks. The tower's design take cues from nearby civic buildings such as the recently-completed Federal Courthouse and the Los Angeles Police Administration Building.

Sources indicate that global architecture firm Gensler is designing the tower.

This isn't Times Mirror Square. That's a project across the street involving the rehabilitation of the original LA Times building and 2 new residential towers replacing the 70s addition and parking garage. It's by Onni. Renderings haven't been revealed yet for it. I'd just call this project 2nd/Broadway Tower for now.

Ah. Good catch.

Mods, can you change the name of the project to "2nd and Broadway"?

New design by Solomon Cordwell Buenz. 56 stories, 616 feet; 680 apartments on top of a subway station.

Nice, dig the design, the crown in particular is really cool

I really like this one! Along with the Onni towers next door at the LA Times building as well as Grand Ave to the West, that area will fill in real nicely

LA Times Onni development will get an architectural redesign to take advantage of the unique site and make a bigger impact on the skyline according to LA city council demands, so thats exciting.

Definitely not boring. Will be a nice addition.

This part of downtown really needs something like this. There's some ugly blocks in that stretch that should've been redeveloped years ago.

Yeah but it pushed back the tower development by at least a year.

If it actually greatly increases in quality and height then that will be worth it.

SHOP Architects would be perfect for this site. Neo Art Deco, similar to DeKalb tower going up in Brooklyn would be amazing

Height? Very likely not going to go any higher, I'm sure they stole as much vertical real estate as possible for this project, please chime in if I'm wrong here. Shape? Now we're getting somewhere. L.A. is very prone to boxes, so I think we can assume this one will NOT be a box and instead be a cone, linear abstract, art deco, just something without a flat square top.

I think they can subtract from tower 2 and add it to the taller one. Right now they stand as 53 stories and 37 stories. It can become 60 30.

This one of downtown's best new developments.

Love the openness of the base, but I just wonder how well can those pillars withstand a strong earthquake?

caligrad Sep 29, 2020 12:30 AM

^^^ if you peeel away the facades on a lot of these skyscrapers, you'll see that not only does their base look just like this but their entire structure looks like this. It will be fine in earthquakes.
