I'll post a series of photos on how the beloved shores were breached, even as vows of rebuilding begin...

It's depressing looking at these photos. It will take some time, however these areas will be rebuilt . . . hopefully smarter, although sometimes not even the most strategic of planning can outwit the forces of nature.

Yeah, it is heartbreaking to see all of the damage done to the city's great waterfront communities and along the Jersey Shore. But the people of this region are tough, and there's no doubt that they will rebuild. More precautions have to go into the rebuilding as well. But the city and it's environs along the shore have a unique relationship with the water - sometimes as adversaries, but more often than not, friends. You can see it in the photos before (previous pages) and after the storm. But its a relationship that won't end. So this thread is a personal tribute to that.

:previous: Better upgrade that infrastructure. I honestly thought everything was going to at least barely survive.

CCs77 Dec 1, 2012 12:12 AM

Google Earth has been updated for the New York area as november 3rd.
It is the first time I see they update it within the same month of the image. Evidently, that has been made to show the damge caused by Sandy. It is also remarkable that the entire NY area, (or at least a big part of it) has been updated to the same day of november 3rd, which is very unusual, since often you see a mosaic of different dates.

Here some captures of before and after in the Rockaway.

Notice how the beach has been eroded, before there was a strip about 30 meters wide, and after the waves reach the remains of the boardwalk.

http://imageshack.us/a/img203/6620/sandyafter2.jpg

The burned down area in Breezy Point, this area seems particularly affected, you can see that some houses were riped off their foundations, even this area is separated from the sea with a strip of undeveloped land that places it half kilometer away from the coast.

The ship washed ashore in Staten Island.

A bonus, a complex of houses being built in Rockaway.
I find it terrible that they put up such kind of development, that seems transplanted from Phoenix, in that place, with a Subway station right next to it, such a waste, they could do much better.
They should do a mix of 5-6 stories lowrises lined at the coast, some 8-10 stories next to the station, an single or bifamiliar homes in the rest of the area, but more similar as the ones there are in the rest of the peninsula.

It will certainly take some time, however the area will bounce back. It's incredibly surreal looking at those photos . . . hard to believe that actually happened.

I ventured out to Rockaway Beach on Sunday, my fifth trip there since summer started. Yesterday was particularly gorgeous. There was a refreshing breeze (okay, maybe a little strong at times and some sand got in my beer) and the ocean was calm and invigorating—I overheard a couple of kids complain that it was "freezing" but they're nuts, it's perfect right now. The Atlantic's always a little chilly at first but that's what you want when you're overheating in the blazing sun, right?

Anyway, Rockaway Beach is an urban gem, and last weekend photographer Tod Seelie was there to document the beach style so you know what to wear (kidding, it obviously doesn't matter). It's a relief to see the community bouncing back from Hurricane Sandy, but the beach still has a ways to go. A large section of the boardwalk that was ripped off during the surge has yet to be restored, and some parts of the beach are still off-limits.

A few tips for the Rockaway-bound if you've never been there:

◾The NYPD vigilantly issues summonses for open container violations on the beach. Do not openly drink beer or wine or Four Loko out there; bring Solo cups and discreetly pour whatever contraband into that and you'll be fine (probably).

◾The beach gets crowded near the bathroom and concession facilities at Beach 86th Street and Beach 97th Street, but I walked a few blocks further to Beach 81st Street yesterday and it was much more chill.

◾If you don't want to take the A train, Rockabus offers hourly trips to Rockaway and Jacob Riis from Williamsburg and the Lower East Side. $15 round trip, and they're now doing late-night service back from the new Playland Motel.

◾The lifeguards tend to blow their whistles incessantly, waving at various swimmers to stay away from the rock jetties or come closer to shore. If this sort of thing annoys you, you may want to pick your spot equidistant between the lifeguard stands.

◾If you can accept waiting on line for 20 minutes or so, you should definitely walk over to Rockaway Taco for some tasty tacos. The line moves quickly and is always longer than it appears, and once you put your order in the food usually comes out immediately. (Always remember to wear your frisbee face mask for extra protection.)
