This building was not built because Dubai needed square footage like that. For its cost they got very little square footage for their dollar in comparison to other Dubai projects (but still far more than in the USA or any other major nation).

Like Taipei 101, the Petronas Towers and most other supertalls in developing countries, this building was built to show off, instead of having a practical function.

Developers paid for decades on an empty Empire State Building. Unfortunately for Dubai, I don't think their market will bounce back to New York levels. Remember Manhattan has nearly 400,000,000 sq ft of office space to Dubai's 80,000,000.

A first attempt of making a time lapse, shot from the Rooftop Bar at Four Point Sheraton. Actually, Burj Khalifa was glittering like crazy and radiating swirling beams like a light house. However, this is not visible due to the wide angle lens. Furthermore, the video is a bit too dark. Well, each time you learn something new, I guess...

by the way, what does Khalifa mean?

hunser Jan 18, 2011 9:10 PM

:previous: the caliph owns the so called caliphate.

from wiki:

Quote:

The Caliph (Arabic: خليفة‎; /khalīfah) is the head of state in a Caliphate, and the title for the leader of the Islamic Ummah, an Islamic community ruled by the Shari'ah. It is a transcribed version of the Arabic word Khalīfah which means "successor" or "representative".
Quote:

The term caliphate (from the Arabic خلافة or khilāfa) refers to the first system of government established in Islam, and represented the political unity of the Muslim Ummah (nation). In theory, it is a constitutional republic, meaning that the head of state (the Caliph) and other officials are representatives of the people and must govern according to Islamic law, which limits the government's power over citizens.

Correct, but here "Khailfa" refers to the the ruler of Abu Dhabi, Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
The name "Khalifa" means Leader, Successor, among other meanings.

I just found this on youtube, it is the craziest Burj Khalifa video, no scratch that, it's the most vertigo inducing skyscraper video ever, not only are these guys on top of the pinacle but they are sitting on tiny perches on top of the pinnacle.

I shot this through an airplane window on a hazy day at noon against the light. One day I shall have better conditions, insha'allah :)

Dubai: 'Suicide jump' from world's tallest skyscrape

A man has committed suicide by jumping from the world's tallest skyscraper in Dubai, according to its owner.

The man, in his 20s, fell from the 147th floor of the 2,717ft (828m) Burj Khalifa, landing on a deck on the 108th floor, local media reported.

The building's owner, Emaar Properties, confirmed "an incident involving a male" took place on Tuesday morning.

It would be the first known suicide from the 160-storey landmark, which opened in January 2010.

"The concerned authorities have confirmed that it was a suicide, and we are awaiting the final report," Emaar's statement said.

Reports on the websites of the Gulf News and 7 Days newspapers said the man had jumped after a dispute with his employer.

Police statements showed that a holiday he had requested was turned down, the National reported.

The Burj Khalifa was designed by Chicago-based architects Skidmore, Owings & Merrill.

It is the tallest freestanding structure in the world, according to its developer
