since i'm currently in vienna i'll try to take some new shots this week.

Nice, but too damned bad about the plaza at ground level. I hate plazas (more often than not, bereft of people due to wind effects, or utter banality). Much better is to rise flush from the sidewalk.

the whole project will be built on the so called "donauplatte" (platte = plate / board). |
the towers will change vienna's skyline completely. they are located in the main cluster --> vienna international center, UNO city and others.
|
Nice towers!
|
Oh my Österreich! These look great! Congratulations! And with the German/Austrian obsession with glass I'm sure the glass on these suckers will look amazing.
Ps - Is this anywhere near the Prater? |
Great design! Will be fun to follow this great project.

the prater is close by. just drive over the bridge, reichsbrücke, and you are practically already there. or you could take a swim across the danube. :D |

took these today, the quality is not the best because i used my crappy phone. also the gate was open for a short time so i could enter the construction site (from north). next time i'll try to take more detailed pics.
btw. it seems they are still doing foundation / piling work. july, 20th http://img40.imageshack.us/img40/9141/img038w.jpg http://img197.imageshack.us/img197/6867/img037j.jpg http://img200.imageshack.us/img200/6346/img036bc.jpg http://img251.imageshack.us/img251/2346/img035q.jpg http://img13.imageshack.us/img13/3171/img034mo.jpg http://img517.imageshack.us/img517/4792/img033z.jpg http://img801.imageshack.us/img801/6411/img031c.jpg http://img12.imageshack.us/img12/151/img030xf.jpg http://img269.imageshack.us/img269/6295/img029v.jpg |
some areal shots so you know where the towers will stand in the skyline...

Architectural Design The DC Towers - new landmarks for the city. Both of the two slim towers were designed by French star architect Dominique Perrault while the project itself is being realised in cooperation with the Viennese architectural firm of Hoffmann-Janz Architekten. Mr. Perrault, noted internationally for his design of the French National Library in Paris, conceived a master plan for the remaining areas of the VIENNA DC Donau-City which, in addition to the two breath-taking towers, will also include living and communication spaces in correspondence with the nearby Danube river. Our goal: to create a state-of-the-art structure and to shape an emotional statement for a modern interpretation of Vienna as a business location. This project is not about ostentatiously striving to set new height records but rather about creating superbly designed buildings which will make a powerful statement thanks to their sophisticated style and their superior quality as building objects. Their height is the result of our ambition to preserve the compelling aesthetics of slender towers when giving structural shape to their planned cubic content. Construction The supporting framework of the DC Towers was developed by means of spatial computer models using the finite element method (FEM). Its design is based on the results of an extensive wind tunnel analysis, thoroughly investigating wind impact and framework response while also taking into consideration environmental factors. Additionally, the design of the supporting framework is founded on an in-depth examination of the subsoil as well as computerised spatial calculations regarding interactions between the soil and the building. All calculations were performed in accordance with the latest standards and constructional requirements which of course also include high earthquake impact safety. By means of so-called outrigger structures, the stress exerted by horizontal forces is distributed between the building core and support pillars so that the weight acting on the inner access core is reduced by transmitting forces through the pillars. For added comfort, a deflection pendulum serving as a vibration-damping structure has been included in the uppermost area of the buildings. Area Development As the highlights of the VIENNA DC area the DC Tower 1 and 2 also follow the development logic of the existing buildings in the Donau City: The pedestrian and motor traffic access ways are designed on different levels. To ensure good orientation – also from the lower levels – the general taxi and car access leads to a large area on the -1 level, which is connected to the pedestrian level with a large external staircase. In addition, these different structural levels allow you to establish separated entrances for different usages of DC Tower 1. Square Design / Access Area A customised wind tunnel mock-up of the DC Towers and their surroundings was built and subjected to several rounds and types of testing to develop measures for improving wind comfort in near-ground zones. This study resulted in a slight adaptation of the building structure and the development of elements which break both fall and horizontal winds while also conforming to the architectural language of the towers. This concept designed by Dominique Perrault also has a stylistic function, serving as a shield against wind, rain and sunlight. Access / Parking The DC Towers high-rise complex is centrally and plainly accessible via the existing VIENNA DC roundabout. Tower 1 tenants will be able to enter the garage directly from this level with their vehicles and then proceed to the various lobbies of the building by means of distributing elevators. Via a prominent driveway ramp, visitors, taxis and busses will be guided to the access level allowing entry to individual parking and drive-up levels. A separate coach parking lot is planned for visitor coaches. This level will also be used for all delivery and disposal activities. To this end, a central loading yard including associated handling areas and supply elevators will be built. http://www.dctowers.at/images/100616...iessung_en.jpg Security Concept Apart from the strict separation of individual flows of moving persons and objects resulting from diverse building uses, the security concept of DC Tower 1 also complies with common international protection guidelines against terrorist attacks. The building is divided into different security zones allowing a controlled management of visitor flows. All building entrances will be secured; in lobby areas, all entering and exiting persons will be guided - in some cases by means of passage restriction systems - and monitored. In this process, intelligent elevator control systems will prevent any accidental intermingling of user groups by automatically guiding each of them to their assigned area. A total of 30 elevators and one escalator system (Levels -1 to 0) will be required to ensure an appropriate degree of security and comfort in DC Tower 1. Buildings Economy / Certifications The DC Tower combines architectural aesthetics with advanced 'green' construction and functionality. It will be one of the first Austrian office towers built and equipped in accordance with the energy and sustainability requirements for 'green buildings' issued by the European Commission. Furthermore, we plan to achieve gold or platinum status certification according to the LEED© system. Energy-saving and energy-generating measures Energy-saving building engineering installations and systems have long been included in all high-rise buildings built by WED AG as a matter of course. Additional innovations such as the use of ground water for cooling purposes, rain water management, energy generation by means of solar arrays and photovoltaics as well as elevator system energy recovery are already being studied. Other concepts focussing on heat recovery are in their development stages. In addition to various planning measures including a separate garage sector for cars using alternative propulsion systems which will be able to refuel with energy generated by the building itself, requirements for various building uses will be of major importance for the development of the overall concept. Using energy responsibly and only when, where and as long as it is actually needed is our motto. Ultimately, this philosophy will not only benefit the utility budget of individual users but will primarily help conserve existing resources and thus conform to the 'green building' idea.
