I think it's too early to pass judgment. I can't really tell from the renderings what kind of material these will be. Corrugated metal? Hardie board? Vinyl siding?

Finally activity at this old building. I took this today so it looks like they're starting to clean it out. A number of posts ago there was some permits or something about a "10,000 sq ft or greater retail establishment' or something...but that was about the level of detail.

Should be interesting, anythingis better than the vacant building, but hopefully it's alittle more interesting than a tire service center..

I have no idea who is moving in there but it is restaurant supply items. Tables, chairs, kitchen equipment etc.

Excellent news. This is the last major vacant building (besides the State Palace Theatre) along the new Loyola Streetcar route. Also, its revitalization hopefully will bring sunlight to two sketchy, major intersections (Loyola/Tulane and Rampart/Tulane). :tup:

No, but up until a few years ago it was graduate student housing (mainly medical) for Tulane. I had a friend that lived there. I did notice that they eventually moved them all out though and it's been vacant a short while (2-3 years).

The building on Jeff Davis at Washington has come down really quickly. Anybody have any idea what is going up in its place?

Does anyone know what the renovations going on in the blighted row of buildings on Girod St. just lakebound of Lucy's are about? There is a chainlinked fence on Girod with no parking on that side of the street.

Seriously, that is a tremendous improvement. Not only are you getting rid of the blight, you're going from a 1 story building to a 7 or 8 story building! Nice to add some new height to the WHD.

This isn't really good news yet but still promising? The DDD says atleast 3 retailers are looking at Canal Street.

Ill tell you the main problem. Retailers want to be on canal but south of Camp. There really isnt any space south of Camp. That parking lot at canal place would lease really quickly if they would build something there.

This proposal by Susan Guidry is such an overreaction by about a dozen really loud neighbors of Tulane. They're trying to punish Loyola, Xavier, and Tulane (and possibly Delgado?) for one project they don't like. It sets an awful precedent and the whole "throw up red tape because rich people don't like something" move is like a blast from the (recent) past of New Orleans. Kind of scary. Hopefully level heads prevail. I signed the petition, and it looks like so have a lot of other people.

On a more uplifting note, Chief Executive magazine just released their list of best states for business as rated by CEOs. Louisiana is now the 13th-best state for doing business! That's a jump from 27th last year and 47th in 2006. They called us the "Cinderella of business improvement." :banana:

What petition did you sign? Also, I think its quite clear that Susan Guidry isnt a friend of development and caters too much to nimbys. Time start working on her replacement. Whens the next election for that district?

I wonder how many people were turned off by the sneaky subscription to the Democratic newsletter at the end? Tulane should have started their own petition on a non-partisan site.

This is a welcome move to help fix up the city, but in the meantime other cities are switching to LED luminaires that have a lifespan 3 times longer than a typical high-pressure sodium light, while using less electricity (streetlights typically account for 1/3 to 1/2 of the city's total electric bill, so this really pays off).

As usual, NOLA is stuck in the past, barely even playing catch-up.

Im not so sure its just about that. Im not a huge fan of the lighting these new lights put off. Personal choice I guess.
