Been there five times in all sorts of weather. It is such a beautiful city. Last summer my wife and I walked from our hotel near the WH up to the zoo and then rode city share bikes down though Georgetown to the Lincoln Memorial. I saw a lot of amazing architecture that you never see in movies.

Beautiful shots. What a quick trip. How did you manage just 3 days half way around the world? :)

Great pictures so far!

Located west of the National Mall, Georgetown is the city's oldest neighbourhood, full of quiet side streets of simple but elegant homes.

Great pics! One of my favorite U.S. cities.

The Vietnam Veterans Memorial was designed by an architecture student to commemorate the over 58,000 Americans who died. Simply two triangular black walls below the ground, it looks towards both the Washington Momument and the Lincoln Memorial.
http://www.globalphotos.org/washingt...5/IMG_3911.jpg http://www.globalphotos.org/washingt...5/IMG_3925.jpg http://www.globalphotos.org/washingt...5/IMG_3913.jpg Once a swampy marsh, the Lincoln Memorial site was transformed into a grand monument for this pivotal president in 1914. Walk up the long staircase, turn around, and enjoy views of the reflecting pool and the Washington Monument beyond. Be amazed. http://www.globalphotos.org/washingt...5/IMG_3954.jpg http://www.globalphotos.org/washingt...5/IMG_3968.jpg http://www.globalphotos.org/washingt...5/IMG_3973.jpg The Korean War Veterans Memorial was dedicated in 1995, 42 years after the armistice that stopped the war. 19 stainless steel statues in ponchos are seen moving towards the US flag, while the wall next to them bear images of over 2400 veterans. http://www.globalphotos.org/washingt...5/IMG_4007.jpg http://www.globalphotos.org/washingt...5/IMG_4019.jpg Perhaps the cold weather deterred visitors from walking around the Tidal Basin where these monuments are located. I had most of these spaces all to myself. Long forgotten but recently revitalized in 2011, the DC War Memorial was dedicated in 1931 and commemorates 499 local citizens who perished in World War I. http://www.globalphotos.org/washingt...5/IMG_4075.jpg he Tidal Basin offers a nice backdrop to many of the monuments in the National Mall area. Benches along the waterfront are a great place for a picnic in the summer. http://www.globalphotos.org/washingt...5/IMG_4125.jpg The FDR Memorial opened in 1997 and stretches quite a long linear distance over 4 outdoor rooms, each depicting one of his terms in office. http://www.globalphotos.org/washingt...5/IMG_4131.jpg http://www.globalphotos.org/washingt...5/IMG_4139.jpg http://www.globalphotos.org/washingt...5/IMG_4152.jpg http://www.globalphotos.org/washingt...5/IMG_4165.jpg The Jefferson Memorial was conceived by FDR, who believed his role deserved a monument just like Lincoln. Dedicated in 1943, his statue was later recast in bronze and now looks towards the White House. http://www.globalphotos.org/washingt...5/IMG_4222.jpg The Washington Monument is made of 36,000 pieces of marble and granite. Construction began in 1848 but stopped part-way due to lack of funds, only to resume in 1876 when the president authorized its completion. Today, the different colours on the monument mark the two different construction periods. Damaged by the 2011 earthquake, the elevator to the top gallery is still being renovated and hence the monument remains closed until 2019. http://www.globalphotos.org/washingt...4/IMG_3681.jpg http://www.globalphotos.org/washingt...6/IMG_8916.jpg More on these monuments on my website : http://www.globalphotos.org/dc-lincoln.htm |
From the air, DC isn't a very big highrise city.
http://www.globalphotos.org/washingt...6/IMG_8958.jpg http://www.globalphotos.org/washingt...6/IMG_8970.jpg President Lincoln came here for an evening performance in 1865. The rowdy crowd was the perfect cover for the assassin to carry out his deed. Ford's Theatre still serves the same purpose today, but free tours are available to see Lincoln's VIP box and a museum of his legacy. During low season, it is not necessary to pre-book online for a nominal fee of $3. http://www.globalphotos.org/washingt...6/IMG_8830.jpg http://www.globalphotos.org/washingt...6/IMG_8850.jpg http://www.globalphotos.org/washingt...6/IMG_8842.jpg The Watergate scandal brought down Richard Nixon in 1974. Otherwise, the buildings remain in use today, including apartments and a hotel. http://www.globalphotos.org/washingt...6/IMG_8821.jpg http://www.globalphotos.org/washingt...6/IMG_8853.jpg Some colours on mundane and boring buildings can spice up the streetscape. http://www.globalphotos.org/washingt...6/IMG_8817.jpg While the Old Post Office has been renovated into the Trump Hotel, the clock tower is freely-accessible to tourists as it is managed by the National Park Service. Built in 1899, an elevator now takes you up 315 feet for a panoramic view of the city. http://www.globalphotos.org/washingt...5/IMG_4389.jpg http://www.globalphotos.org/washingt...5/IMG_4469.jpg Chinatown here is quite small although stores do show off their Chinese names, even for mainstream stores such as Hooters or Dunkin Donuts. http://www.globalphotos.org/washingt...4/IMG_3860.jpg |
I uh flew over Washington, D.C. in late afternoon of 2011 while from Philly to NYC, it was a half-hour flight if I remember correctly, and in a small airplane flying at low altitude.
I didn't realize it was DC during flight until I saw the photo I took with my DC afterwards at hotel (actually rented house). It was good memory when flying here and there in the U.S. |
Must get back to their nations capital.

In 1912, Tokyo gifted 3000 cherry trees to Washington DC to celebrate the friendship between the 2 countries. Around late March and early April, the Tidal Basin is awash in pink, and access is all free. I returned to DC for a 2nd visit that year to see them in bloom.

Here's a list of its remains. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gutenb...omplete_copies Depending on my mood, it could well bring tears to my eyes if I saw one of these... Bon, it'd be a bit embarrassing to almost start crying in a library or a museum, though. This was such a major achievement, obviously one of the most significant ever. |
