Thunder Bay has similar problems to Timmins in terms of poverty, homelessness, social issues, etc. Our homeless population is estimated at over 500, our homeless shelter is always over capacity and the area around it has sporadic camps. We had a tent city of homeless people in a big box retail district but the city demolished it last year, so the homeless have spread to literally every corner of the city. Local urbexers have complained that every abandoned building they enter has several homeless people living in it, which has made the practice even more risky than it was before.

Thunder Bay had 11 murders last year, achieving Canada's highest urban homicide rate since records began at just under 10 per 100,000. Most of them were between homeless aboriginals. The most difficult thing about the cases is that so few of them have any recollection of the events actually taking place, due to the extreme substance abuse. A wide variety of substances are abused here, and we don't have enough beds to treat them. They often start these addictions in the northern reserves, which have 0 beds, and then get sent here to receive help that doesn't exist.


Thunder Bay recorded its first homicide last week (and the first in over 6 months, after a record setting year). An 18 year old man assaulted a 22 year old woman (said to be his girlfriend), who later succumbed to the injuries. The incident happened at a trailer park on the city's boundary with the reserve, and the man was from the reserve (both were native), so once again this has flared up racial tensions in the city. Fortunately, it was overshadowed by a mill burning down. :shrug:

The Greater Montreal area added 4 more homicides in a span of a few hours in 2 different areas, though none in the City proper - and all related

International intrigue. Poor guy.

London updates their numbers every month or so. As of June 1st London is sitting at 3 murders.

Toronto is currently at 25 homicides, the same as last year at this time. However shootings in the city are way up compared to last year, with 139 occurrences (and 231 victims) so far compared to 99 occurrences (and 126 victims) at this time last year, with 91 of this year's shootings resulting in death or injury compared to 57 in 2014.

It's apparent that a large percentage of shooting victims in the city avoid death by the luck of the draw.

Renewed hunt for a serial killer in Edmonton region after they discover the remains in one improvised grave had more than one body in it. This serial killer is believed to have four victims so far with killing streak spanning six years.

Toronto is at 30 after a man was stabbed to death in St. Jamestown and two people were shot and killed at Drake's OVO after party over the long weekend.

Québec City is still at 1. On July 12 a French tourist was killed in St. Sauveur and his wife injured by a crazy neighbour of the couple's daughter.

Ottawa was at 5 as of July 21.

It's a tragedy about the 2-year-old girl who was murdered in Alberta. :( :( :(

Otherwise, so far for 2015, Regina is at 7 murders.

As I said elsewhere, when I heard the news that they had the suspect and not the child, I knew the child was dead. Very sad.

St. John's is now at 1 (I believe?) for 2015. I can't remember if the earlier ones were previous years or not...

A man armed with a shotgun held up the Captain's Quarters on King's Bridge Road (very near downtown, in a portion of a well-to-do neighbourhood that's been converted to rentals), held up the barmaid. When he started getting aggressive with her because she didn't have enough money in his mind, a customer intervened and was shot and killed.

A 61 year old man was shot and killed by an arrow in Kitchener yesterday. No word yet as to the perpetrator. Not sure how many homicides that makes here so far this year.

according to the crime map, calgary is at 10 for the last 6 months. Anyone have an updated figure?
