Vancouver: Been There, Done That
So for my latest Vancouver photothread I'm going in a totally different direction from what I usually shoot and what you will (mostly) see is Vancouver cliches. Like glass condos, lots of water and gray skies. I usually focus on Van's older buildings but for some reason on my three hour walk the other day, I decided to go for the typical, well, just because.
So enjoy and embrace a side of Vancouver I don't normally show. Okay, contrary to what I just said, these first few picks start in the Chinatown area, then on down to near the water I went after that. Even the sketchies are putting up their Christmas decorations early! http://i537.photobucket.com/albums/f...7/DSCF7997.jpg Chinatown storefront window display: http://i537.photobucket.com/albums/f...7/DSCF7998.jpg Some of the wares you can fond out on display in Chinatown: http://i537.photobucket.com/albums/f...7/DSCF7999.jpg The good ol' Orange No. 5. Two claims to fame this place has: 1) This is where, apparently, Courtney Love got her start as a stripper 2) Bon Jovi named one of their albums "Slippery When Wet" after reading it displayed on one of the signs outside Orange No. 5. A sad note, however, the sign on the left refers to a staff member who recently passed away of a heart attack: http://i537.photobucket.com/albums/f...7/DSCF8000.jpg Exercise in juxtaposition? http://i537.photobucket.com/albums/f...7/DSCF8001.jpg Vancouver port: http://i537.photobucket.com/albums/f...7/DSCF8002.jpg Now, making our way to CRAB Park which was set aside as a park in the 80s due to some community activists who thought Vancouver needed a neighbourhood downtown park that fronts the water. CRAB stands for Create a Real Available Beach but is officially know as Portside Park. That's Harbour Centre all blurry in the background there. http://i537.photobucket.com/albums/f...7/DSCF8004.jpg Downtown from CRAB Park: http://i537.photobucket.com/albums/f...7/DSCF8005.jpg A somber tribute: http://i537.photobucket.com/albums/f...7/DSCF8006.jpg Closed off pier: http://i537.photobucket.com/albums/f...7/DSCF8007.jpg Another downtown shot from the park: http://i537.photobucket.com/albums/f...7/DSCF8008.jpg That's North Vancouver over the water: http://i537.photobucket.com/albums/f...7/DSCF8009.jpg West Vancouver, way off in the clouds. The British Properties, the highest lot of houses on the mountain, have some of Canada's most expensive homes: http://i537.photobucket.com/albums/f...7/DSCF8010.jpg More of CRAB Park: http://i537.photobucket.com/albums/f...7/DSCF8015.jpg http://i537.photobucket.com/albums/f...7/DSCF8016.jpg http://i537.photobucket.com/albums/f...7/DSCF8018.jpg Moving west now, and a bit closer to the downtown. Hopefully someday this ugly parking lot won't exist: http://i537.photobucket.com/albums/f...7/DSCF8019.jpg Some backside of a few buildings that are located in Gastown: http://i537.photobucket.com/albums/f...7/DSCF8020.jpg Some cool character office space with great views of the water, I'm sure: http://i537.photobucket.com/albums/f...7/DSCF8021.jpg The Vancouver Sun Building, a crow and a lamp standard: http://i537.photobucket.com/albums/f...7/DSCF8023.jpg http://i537.photobucket.com/albums/f...7/DSCF8024.jpg Canada Place and some fluffy clouds: http://i537.photobucket.com/albums/f...7/DSCF8025.jpg Now we're at Canada Place: http://i537.photobucket.com/albums/f...7/DSCF8026.jpg Vancouver's new convention centre, which is almost done construction and features a green roof. As in grass on the roof. Cool! http://i537.photobucket.com/albums/f...7/DSCF8028.jpg A fountain and some curious tourists: http://i537.photobucket.com/albums/f...7/DSCF8029.jpg Yay, the sun! More tourists in this shot: http://i537.photobucket.com/albums/f...7/DSCF8030.jpg Another convention centre shot: http://i537.photobucket.com/albums/f...7/DSCF8031.jpg A somewhat blurry Marine Building, an Art Deco gem. The lobby and elevators in this beauty are a sight to behold: http://i537.photobucket.com/albums/f...7/DSCF8032.jpg Shaw Tower: http://i537.photobucket.com/albums/f...7/DSCF8033.jpg Shangri-La in the background and a living, breathing city in the foreground: http://i537.photobucket.com/albums/f...7/DSCF8037.jpg Some expensive townhomes: http://i537.photobucket.com/albums/f...7/DSCF8038.jpg Now, on to Coal Harbour and some condo goodness: http://i537.photobucket.com/albums/f...7/DSCF8039.jpg http://i537.photobucket.com/albums/f...7/DSCF8040.jpg Lone dock walker: http://i537.photobucket.com/albums/f...7/DSCF8041.jpg Another look at the convention centre madness: http://i537.photobucket.com/albums/f...7/DSCF8042.jpg http://i537.photobucket.com/albums/f...7/DSCF8043.jpg A pre flight cormorant: http://i537.photobucket.com/albums/f...7/DSCF8044.jpg Ok, so Vancouver lost its upside down church to Calgary but we still have this, right? Until the richies in Coal Harbour complain about it, that is.... http://i537.photobucket.com/albums/f...7/DSCF8045.jpg Some house boats with character! http://i537.photobucket.com/albums/f...7/DSCF8046.jpg City of Glass? Oh yeah! http://i537.photobucket.com/albums/f...7/DSCF8047.jpg Green, blue, violet: http://i537.photobucket.com/albums/f...7/DSCF8048.jpg There seems to be a building that stands out in this picture but I can't figure out why.... http://i537.photobucket.com/albums/f...7/DSCF8050.jpg Only 3/4 of a million US? I'll take it! http://i537.photobucket.com/albums/f...7/DSCF8051.jpg Vancouver opulence: http://i537.photobucket.com/albums/f...7/DSCF8053.jpg Hook, line and fish: http://i537.photobucket.com/albums/f...7/DSCF8054.jpg Water, boats, evergreens, mountains and clouds. Ahh Vancouver, I love you! http://i537.photobucket.com/albums/f...7/DSCF8055.jpg Near Stanley Park: http://i537.photobucket.com/albums/f...7/DSCF8060.jpg http://i537.photobucket.com/albums/f...7/DSCF8061.jpg Welcome to Vancouver? I'll say: http://i537.photobucket.com/albums/f...7/DSCF8062.jpg This building gets filed under the ironic category, as well it gets extra points for being slightly prophetic as it was probably built in the 1960s, well before the glass condo infestation that took place later on: http://i537.photobucket.com/albums/f...7/DSCF8065.jpg Tourists and Lost Lagoon, Stanley Park: http://i537.photobucket.com/albums/f...7/DSCF8066.jpg Waterfowl of Lost Lagoon and some much needed serenity: http://i537.photobucket.com/albums/f...7/DSCF8069.jpg Hello Mr. Swan! http://i537.photobucket.com/albums/f...7/DSCF8071.jpg Weeping Willow (I think) and a cyclist: http://i537.photobucket.com/albums/f...7/DSCF8072.jpg Tennis courts and where Stanley Park meets the West End: http://i537.photobucket.com/albums/f...7/DSCF8074.jpg Darn, looks like I missed a gorgeous sunset. Oh well, the swans were worth it: http://i537.photobucket.com/albums/f...7/DSCF8075.jpg West End rooming house: http://i537.photobucket.com/albums/f...7/DSCF8076.jpg Some last minute election campaigning. We had a civic election on this day and these guys ended up winning the mayor's spot by a landslide: http://i537.photobucket.com/albums/f...7/DSCF8077.jpg I heard this place was being sued by the Olympic people for copy write infringement of the rings but that could just be rumour: http://i537.photobucket.com/albums/f...7/DSCF8078.jpg Palm trees and English Bay: http://i537.photobucket.com/albums/f...7/DSCF8079.jpg More tourists: http://i537.photobucket.com/albums/f...7/DSCF8080.jpg http://i537.photobucket.com/albums/f...7/DSCF8081.jpg Ship anchored in English Bay: http://i537.photobucket.com/albums/f...7/DSCF8082.jpg Davie and Denman Streets. Always a hub of activity and stuff: http://i537.photobucket.com/albums/f...7/DSCF8083.jpg Even 7-11 has neon! http://i537.photobucket.com/albums/f...7/DSCF8084.jpg A building I photographed a few times before but now the palms have Christmas lights on them! http://i537.photobucket.com/albums/f...7/DSCF8085.jpg Further down Denman Street: http://i537.photobucket.com/albums/f...7/DSCF8086.jpg More neon: http://i537.photobucket.com/albums/f...7/DSCF8088.jpg Some bonus shots and on to another day and a totally different area, this time we're on Broadway in East Van and back to some old buildings: http://i537.photobucket.com/albums/f...7/DSCF8089.jpg Some fine, old buildings with the exception of that dirty, stuccoed, pink monstrosity on the right: http://i537.photobucket.com/albums/f...7/DSCF8093.jpg Seb's and a doggie who did not want to turn for the camera: http://i537.photobucket.com/albums/f...7/DSCF8097.jpg Mount Pleasant and some banners: http://i537.photobucket.com/albums/f...7/DSCF8100.jpg Moments earlier, these dogs had a big sniffing-fest but it looks like the black dog wasn't done yet: http://i537.photobucket.com/albums/f...7/DSCF8101.jpg Coffee connoisseurs outside the trendy and hip Gene: http://i537.photobucket.com/albums/f...7/DSCF8106.jpg One kick-ass old house that has somehow managed to survive where most others houses around it did not: http://i537.photobucket.com/albums/f...7/DSCF8107.jpg Cambie Street and some big box stores in an urban format, like Canadian Tire, Save On Foods, Home Depot, Winners and Home Sense: http://i537.photobucket.com/albums/f...7/DSCF8116.jpg A nearly-finished building at the corner of Cambie and Broadway: http://i537.photobucket.com/albums/f...7/DSCF8121.jpg Vancouver City Hall: http://i537.photobucket.com/albums/f...7/DSCF8123.jpg Thanks for viewing! |
cool pics
and omg I just saw Vancouver on HBO's The Entourage ;) |
Great pics as usual, entheosfog. I'm glad to see that the birds are lovin the convention centre roof already. And that coast guard vessel is kind of cool. Don't see one of those everyday... unless, you know... you work as a coast guard or something.

Hey thanks for the comments everyone. Vancouver is quite photogenic and I love it for that. Plus I don't think I'll ever tire of walking about and taking tons of pics of places I've been to many times before...
