Atlanta: Photo of the Day

I saw these really nice aerials on flickr and wasn't sure where to post them so I created a place for random photos.

Thank you for posting these!
I find it amazing to look at pictures of the skyline and consider what has been built in the last 20 years or so...not a long time in the life of a city. For example, in the 2nd photo, with the exception of Colony Square and a few smaller buildings, practically everything in that shot is 'new'!

Here's a good shot of Buckhead's skyline.

Hi.

I've been lurking here for a long time. I lived in Atlanta from 2000 to 2006. (A year on 26th Street, five years on Peachtree Hills Ave.) I came up to Hyattsville, MD - about two miles from the DC city limits - in August 2006 to go to grad school at U of Maryland in College Park.

Because I didn't know the depths of poverty I was about to fling myself into, I thought I'd be able to come back and visit during spring and/or winter breaks. HA! I laugh at myself.

All that to say: I haven't been back in Atlanta at all since August 2006 and I wonder if I'm going to recognize the place when I get back.:D In just this shot of Buckhead, I can see at least five projects that weren't there when I left, if you count the one under construction on the far left. When I moved up here, Terminus was three stories of naked floor plates. They weren't even finished with the site work at Sovereign. It was just a deep hole and some retaining walls.

I can't believe the absolutely crazy amount of stuff that's gone up in downtown, midtown and Atlantic Station. Ikea had only been open about a year back then (I'm talking about it like it was 35 years ago  ) and they hadn't even started on the Target, let alone the Atlantic and all that other madness over there.

Anyway, I just wanted to tell ya'll (that word looks so funny in print) how fantastic it is that there are other people who geek out about construction and development and take all these great pictures. By hanging out on this forum, I've been able to watch the city change from a distance. I'm going straight up the wall with impatience to move back to town. I finished grad school in May, but I chose the worst possible time to get a master's degree in journalism, so the job situation is not pretty. I've been scraping by on temp work at law firms since June, but one of the things I hate about DC is that it's so expensive to live here that you can't afford to leave. (My apartment: 521 sq ft, $860/month).

Unless something changes, I should finally be out of here in about six weeks, though. I can't wait! I miss Atlanta SO much.

Nice! I like how the office building creates a little peak to that little cluster in the skyline.

trainiac & KB0679 - Beautiful shots, thanks so much for sharing.

KB0679 - Did the Fed security bother you? Just wondering.

Thanks again, guys!

Sad, isn't it, that ordinary citizens are now chased off public property as if they had no right to be there?

I like the photos, too!

You know, to be honest cybele, I'm not really sure what the security situation is there. I'm sure they may run people off from the Plaza, but I really don't know.

I think it is beautiful, and should serve as an outdoor "living room" for the mile. I know their security is of utmost importance, but the place is built like a fortress and they have their own, deputized Federal police force.

I used to work at the Fed when they were still Downtown, and the Fed cops are ALL nice guys & gals - not the type to be overly aggressive, but very serious about their jobs.

Just wondering what the situation is at their new location.
