Sick nasty!
I think this will be the tower that will end the city's legacy for white buildings sparked by the Calatrava as it was really the last large project to follow that trend designed before the recession. |
Well, US Bank Tower is the biggest white building, and it predates the Calatrava.
Regardless, this tower is sick. Score one for Milw! |
Good name (and spelling) for it. It suits it well. I like the streamlined look of it. I've always had a thing for curved corners like that, and I like the hint of an overhang.

^^^ Agreed, I see the whole white thing as also tangent to the rebirth of all of Milwaukee's "cream city" brick as we uncover the brick that caused the name "cream city" out from under years of grime and soot. The whole city has really gone up a few shades on the brightness scale will all the new white structures, cleaned up old cream city brick, and cleaned up city hall. I'm all for a continuation of the tradition of Milwaukee being "Cream City".
Also, this just seems to be more evidence that the boom hasn't really stopped in Milwaukee. The downtown just seems to have so much momentum that projects keep starting despite the recession. Hopefully this bodes well for an uber-boom during the imminent upswing in the economy. |
Usually, neighboring cities don't like each other, but I love Milwaukee and I always enjoy myself there. Perhaps it's because I'm german. Anyway, this building is awesome and I especially love the location. Hopefully a few more tall residential buildings pop up around that area of the city. Milwaukee has planned new developments on or near the river perfectly, and I wish chicago would do the same.
|
Yeah, everybody I know from Chicago who's been to Milwaukee loves the place.
The interior layouts of this building look great, btw -- I love the cut-through fireplaces! |
^ I'm bullish on Milwaukee. I think as a city it is finding a new niche as Chicago's northern "boutique" little brother.
And I like the tower too, btw. |
^^^ Well Milwaukee has been for some time the place people from Chicago move when they don't want to live in or raise their children in the hectic, big city, atmosphere of Chicago, but still want to live in a town with many job opportunities, class, and culture in the lower Lake Michigan area.
The pictures of all the new development there hardly do it any justice. There are parts of the city that look different every time I go home. I mean new buildings just appear out of the ground where there were once gravel lots in a matter of months and they all have excellent, modern designs. |

The Moderne updated their website, especially about pricing options. Construction is still listed as starting this month.
Pricing from the condo units will ranged from $2.5 million to $243k. http://img696.imageshack.us/img696/2056/pricing.jpg Floor Plans for the $2.5 million penthouse: http://img97.imageshack.us/img97/9999/floorplang.jpg Details: 3 bedroom+ study 3.5 bath 4,818 square feet + 1,049 square feet of terrace New images of interior of units: http://img684.imageshack.us/img684/1...orb01900px.jpg http://img62.imageshack.us/img62/348...org01900px.jpg |
I don't really know the Milwaukee market, so are these high prices reasonable given the wealth of the people still looking for downtown Milwaukee residences?
Even in Chicago, developers would have a difficult time selling units in a building at such high prices. EDIT: just realized that the units over a mil are all on floors 28-30. The "regular" units top out at $760, with most around the $250k mark. That seems FAR more realistic. |
Still waiting on HUD...
Moderne high-rise remains on hold pending HUD loan guarantee OK
By Tom Daykin of the Journal Sentinel May 11, 2010 7:15 a.m. The groundbreaking for downtown's Moderne high-rise apartment project remains delayed as developer Rick Barrett continues to wait for final approval from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development for a loan guarantee... http://www.jsonline.com/blogs/business/93326534.html |
Moderne high-rise loan guarantee wins final OK, work to begin soon
By Tom Daykin of the Journal Sentinel Aug. 27, 2010 1:10 p.m. The final approval for a federal loan guarantee to finance the planned downtown Moderne apartment high-rise has just been granted by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, an agency spokeswoman told me Friday afternoon. That approval paves the way for developer Rick Barrett to begin building the Moderne, which will have 203 apartments and 14 condos at the southwest corner of W. Juneau Ave. and N. Old World 3rd St. It will be among the largest construction projects currently happening in the Milwaukee area.
