AUSTIN | The Thompson (5th & Brazos) | 355 FEET | 31 FLOORS | T.O.

This one was first rumored a few weeks back, but it's official now. The article says the elevations show it to be 504 feet tall with 47 floors.

At 504 feet tall, it would be Austin's 4th tallest with the city's 3rd highest roof height.

Exclusive: 47-Story Residential & Hotel Tower Planned for 5th & Brazos

Chicago-Based Magellan Development Group is teaming up with Wanxiang America Real Estate Group to develop a 47-story tower consisting of residential units and a dual-branded hotel. Preliminary elevations show the tower to be 504 feet tall. The dual-branded hotel concept has been gaining popularity around the country lately, and if built today, this would be downtown’s second dual-flag property (the Marriott Courtyard/Residence Inn near the Convention Center was the first).

Austin is on fire. I love the top and parts of the base.

The ATX Aug 22, 2013 3:27 AM

I love the base and openness at street level. The fact that its over 500' is nice too. We're drowning in 400 footers now.

KevinFromTexas Aug 22, 2013 4:23 AM

This is the location. Currently half the lot is a parking lot while the other half is a drive through bank.

Great location. This should provide depth to this area of the skyline.

KevinFromTexas Aug 23, 2013 1:08 AM

Yep. And it'll also be the tallest building north of 5th Street. Right now all the buildings above 400 feet are south of 5th Street, including Frost Bank Tower one block to the southwest of this project. This building should make a nice impact from the east/west views.

Goooo Austin!!! I admire all of Austin's projects.

dc_denizen Aug 23, 2013 1:19 AM

Nice to see the area south of 6th continue to win new developments!.

This is beautiful.

The architects are undoubtedly bKL; the top portion looks similar to The Coast in Chicago. This one is a lot more interesting, though.

That base is inspirational. Love the design of it.

Austin55 Aug 23, 2013 7:30 AM

Frost is Starting to look lost in ATX.

JACKinBeantown Aug 23, 2013 12:48 PM

For the most part, the excitement about this building will be gone once construction is finished.

Design-mind Aug 23, 2013 3:13 PM

That is a very impressive podium.

The ATX Aug 24, 2013 12:11 AM

The local mainstream media finally picked up on this:

I was under the impression that some of this would be office space. But the article says that it is all hotel(s) and residences.

CVC determination filed (this is the 200 block request, not the 100 block request that was also filed).

The ATX Oct 18, 2013 6:11 PM

The CVC determination request for the 200 block is for West 5th. The Magellan tower is proposed for East 5th and Brazos. If it's the 200 block of East 5th rather than the 100 block, then the two CVC determination requests are for unannounced projects.

Ah. I didn't notice that.

The ATX Oct 18, 2013 6:53 PM

To sum up the East/West confusion about the developments on these four adjacent blocks on 5th St.:

200 W 5th – Unannounced mixed use office project
100 W 5th – Lincoln Properties 16-story Office Tower
100 E 5th – Unannounced commercial mixed use project
200 E 5th – Magellan Development ~50-story hotel/residential tower
