Canadian Music Thread Redux (one video per post)

We've done this before, but for some reason it never caught on here - unlike the one on SSC which has been going for years. So let's try it again! A place to post any and all Canadian music*.

And if you're embedding a video, please only one per post, so as not to overload the page.

If it's a brand new love
If I am not the one that you are dreaming of
I am an empty boat at shore, hop on in we'll sail away
and I will carry you, carry you to her door

Or better yet...

I am an empty boat at shore
push me away, I'll float on and you won't,
you won't see me no more...

St. John's is such a musical city with such strong musical connections to several European countries that it always intrigues me to see who gets famous here, and where their fame brings them. Because, more often than not, it's farther east, not west to the mainland.

Ashelin (five sisters from an everyday St. John's family) has been one of the more surprising stories because they are well-known in Europe (Ireland) and virtually unknown in Canada. Usually the divide is not quite that strong.

A fun little song that because a huge summer hit in St. John's this year.

I like this video because it gives a rather accurate taste of the music scene in St. John's.

It's filmed during a live album launch at The Ship (there's one every weekend, it seems). The Ship is probably the most famous folk/alternative music venue but the crowd, while sophisticated, is very generous. So the vibe is always very welcoming, encouraging. It's a great place to launch a career, as Thee Internet is doing right now:

And a little sneak peek for you.

These guys will, in my opinion, be the next big thing from a Canadian perspective out of St. John's. They're already very well-known in town and they've been touring Atlantic Canada. And they're awesome so it's only a matter of time now before the bulk of the mainland catches on to them.

Whenever I feel down, nothing lifts me up like a beautiful harmony... especially not when set to a hauntingly beautiful video of driving through St. John's.

This thread didn't survive last time because there is already a thread like this in Skybar. SSP isn't as lenient about the off topic threads in regional sections as SSC is.

Also, do we really need to give Newfoundlander more venues to post Newfoundland-related things? I was never this bad with the Thunder Bay stuff, was I? :(

I absolutely love The Elizabeatans but their music is hard to find online. I had a friend who played with them occasionally/may still play with them from time to time. I rolled down to CBTG's to watch a set one time and it was magical.

UPDATE: Found a video, including my friend on brass :P

Well, if there is one thing that the Newfoundland postings demonstrate, it is how common Newfoundland-only cultural phenomena are over there. There is no other part of the country where this is regularly the case, except for the francophone areas of course.

One of our few (and best) instrumental duos, a Newfoundlander and a Cape Bretoner.
