Canadian Demolitions

We have a thread for buildings going up, how about one for buildings coming down?

Please post current demolitions of notable buildings in your city here (not buildings demolished in the past)

Demolition has started on the Hamilton Wentworth District School Board in Hamilton:

Heritage Canada says this about it:

Quote:

Thought to be Hamilton architect Joseph Singer's signature work, this elegant modernist 8-storey building partly clad in white marble with elongated arched windows and library in the round is considered by many as the city's best example of mid-century Modern architecture. Opened in 1967, the Education Centre was built as a monument to public education and is located opposite City Hall on prominent Civic Square land donated by the City as a way to convince the Board to remain downtown. Keeping the building from landfill preserves an important piece of Hamilton's history, respects the civic component of the site, and makes ecological and environmental sense.

Maybe someone in Hamilton can take shots as it comes down.

We're really going to regret tearing down a lot of buildings from that era in another 20 years or so I think.

Acajack Aug 1, 2012 6:02 PM

Lunacy!

MTLskyline Aug 1, 2012 7:29 PM

Wow, that's a pretty nice building.

Is it insulated with asbestos or something?

WhipperSnapper Aug 1, 2012 7:53 PM

Toronto has been very active in that department over the past few year however, the only building of stature I can think of currently being demolished is the 17 storey Residence College Hotel at 90 gerrard st west. Of note, the tower is being replaced by a one storey conference centre.

No way! That was one of my favourite buildings in downtown when I worked in Hamilton.. That's a shame, I can definitely see that one becoming a demolition we regret in 30 years.

Coldrsx Aug 1, 2012 9:30 PM

We just lost a cool little modernist building downtown, a former Bank of Montreal.

Perhaps playing fast and loose with the definition of 'past', but here's a shot of the old BoM building coming down three months ago:

To me, the worst demolition of the last years is the Eaton store in Winnipeg. And I never been to Winnipeg!

Andrewjm3D Aug 2, 2012 4:01 AM

A true loss on an epic scale.

ooh...thats a real shame about the building in hamilton.

as for eaton's in winnipeg....it was a shame, but without her loss we would not have the NHL in winnipeg....the building was owned by david thomson who in exchange for the property took ownership in true north sports and entertainment who built an arena in its place....of course, it was his money, influence and prestige that convinced the NHL to bring back a team....had they built the arena anywhere else thomson never would have become involved and we would not have a team....it was a fortuitous combination of circumstances.

eatons defined winnipeg for several past generations......in her death she will define it for future generations in a completely new way.

a very well written article on the subject: ;)

They could have built that arena in a slew of other locations.

Saint Denis Street has seen demolition of historic buildings in the last few years to make way for the new CHUM super hospital.

Saint Denis Street (between Viger Street and René-Lévesque) - greystones already demolished, yellow brick buildings will be as well eventually.

This church is demolished. The tower will sit in front of the CHUM as "art".

So the church is being disassembled than reassembled?

Rico Rommheim Aug 2, 2012 8:01 AM

The loss of the old art deco building is very frustrating. What I find particularly perplexing is that in a city so obsessed with its past and heritage buildings, they allowed a wonderful art deco piece to simply vanish without a whimper.

Montreal has a million ugly buildings, and this year were tearing down one of the nicest.

The_Architect Aug 2, 2012 9:07 AM

One of the more recent demolitions was of the old OPP headquarters at 90 Harbour:

http://homesandcondosblog.com/wp-con...90harbour1.jpg

It's nothing overly special, kinda looks like a high school, but I still saw value in having it down in Southcore to break the monotony, especially considering another aA glass nothing-special condo is replacing it.

Plus it had a Bansky:

Just the tower. This is what happened to the rest of it: http://vanishingmontreal.blogspot.ca...eglise-st.html
