A man shot several times when he opened an apartment door last night has died in hospital.

Police and sources say that just before 7 p.m. last night a 25-year-old man answered a knock at his friend's apartment door. When he opened it, an assailant fired several gunshots in to his body.

The victim was rushed to hospital in critical condition. He died this morning of his injuries.

Calgary is at 33 for the year following discovery of a body in the far SW of the city the other day.

the new year is coming and Montreal is at 29. This makes us one of the safest cities on the continent and is the safest year since 1972. :cheers:

About a week, maybe 2 weeks ago Global Calgary did a story about our 33rd murder, they then went on to say that Edmonton had 34...Not sure if that number is still accurate, but hopefully that helps!

If Thunder Bay can make it 19 hours without a homicide, we'll end the year with 0. A nice change from last year.

We're sitting at 2, possibly 3 (body found outside city limits, but within CMA...).

Murder capital for 2007, and for 2008 a record low...they say its an anomaly, of course, I believe its going to repeat next year and develop into a long-term decline ;)

Toronto ended '08 at 70 - same as '06 and 14 less than last year. That's for the city proper - I have no idea how many in the entire GTA.

Almost one murder daily, sad. How does that compare to other years?

London had a pretty light year compared to many others, especially 2005 when the murder rate per capita exceeded Toronto. But one of the two murders in 2008 was in my neighbourhood, an area that hasn't had a murder in decades, so it did hit home a little. Nobody I knew thankfully, although one of my bosses at work knew the family.

Calgary's off and running past the starting line. Drove past the site around 6 today and there were a dozen cop cruisers. A block or so was cordoned off.

That's the lowest number of murders in Detroit since 1967. We're not sure how much the population has dropped since the 2000 census but I wouldn't be surprised if it's down near 900,000 now.

Winnipeg = 29 = Montreal (our lowest since 1972)

This gang war is getting out of control, guess it just comes with the territory now that we are getting to be a big city. I really hope they dont start bombing each other like the bikers in Montreal did in he 90s.

Homicide isn't the only measure of crime. ;) If anything, so long as its beneath a certain threshold, its the least important considering the rarity of it compared to robbery, assault, burglary, etc.

Not sure I agree with this. I tend to view violent crimes against people (and especially murder) much, much more seriously and worrisome than property crimes. There is a reason why murder is referred to in French as the "irreparable crime" (loose translation here).

What do others think?
