AXA CENTER

The AXA Center (originally The Equitable Tower) is a 229-meter- (752-foot-) tall skyscraper in New York City. It was built in 1986 to house the AXA Group. Current cornerstone tenants include BNP Paribas, Sidley Austin LLP, Willkie Farr & Gallagher LLP, and Citigroup. It is located at 787 Seventh Avenue, New York, New York and the architect was Edward Larrabee Barnes.

The tower has 54 stories, which include a 100-seat auditorium, a number of restaurants and a fitness club.

Not one of Edward Larrabee Barnes' better works. The top is incredibly odd looking and the color scheme isn't much better.

I always thought of it as a big version of Mc Graw Hill... even though the color scheme is very different, and the top is simplified.

The only redeeming feature is the public concourse. I don't care for any other aspect of the building, even as a skyline filler. One of my least favourite buildings in the city.

I’ve always loved how incorporated this building is with the streetscape, between the concourse and the atrium lobby; it’s always been on of my favorite features. Another aspect I love about the building is how it’s connected with the UBS building on 6th by an elevated ‘office’ overpass that covers the width of the plot.

As far as the architecture goes I like how it has the elements of an international box, yet there is a twist to it. I think buildings such as UBS, the Sheraton, and 1313 6th Avenue enhance the presence of the towers size, height, and overall presence. The coloring of the façade also helps to bring attention to the tower, and is complimented by the arch on top, which is also present at the base. I’ve always thought the AXA Center is one of Manhattan’s best fillers.

I agree this a boring filler and the color doesn't help.

I don't like this kind of postmodernism.

It's the most talked about building in New York this week.

Apparently the building is still out of commission, as of today. Probably more because of the investigation, than damage.
