There's one historical quirk about Newfoundland that's unfortunately very visible today. We never allowed municipalities in the traditional sense - everything and everyone was ruled directly from Parliament in St. John's. In 1888, the government did allow St. John's to have a council, but it only served in an advisory role and the Prime Minister appointed its chairman, there was no Mayor. When we joined Canada in 1949, suddenly communities could incorporate into more traditional municipalities.

The visual effect of this is that absolutely none of our towns have grand, old town/city halls. If they do, it's repurposed from some jail/gaol or judge's residence or whatever. So you have communities founded in the 1600s with town halls that are literally converted from anything - even an auto repair shop - in the 1950s/60s.

Nice pictures! So what do the church people think of living in Dildo?

They say it's German for "Still Waters". It isn't. :haha: Also, there's probably never been a German there? The surrounding towns are called Broad Cove, Dildo Head, and Spread Eagle. I'm pretty sure the founders were in on the joke. I'm just surprised "Spread Eagle" as a phrase is that old.

I wasn't expecting to enjoy it at first but once I got used to it was very satisfying. Easy to clean, too. 10/10 Would recommend to a friend.

Now that's a town I'd like to slide right into one day.

I can't decide if I prefer to imagine Dildo as the type of place to sell cheeky self-referential tourist trinkets; or the type where locals (Dildoans? Dildoers?) live blissfully unaware that their town is named after a sex toy...

Either way I can image the signs are at least a popular object of theft, like Fucking.

That said, we have a bunch of old Gallic villages in my country whose names are just as odd and indecent.
It gets me on my nerves, to be honest.

Call me a naive idealist (that I am), I do believe any fair guy can be the prince charming.

I remember seeing Dildo in the atlas when I was 9 years old and even back then I thought it was odd. Nice to finally see what it looks like, thank you.

They had to remove almost all references to its existence from signs on the major highways in the region as they caused, literally, car accidents among tourists.

So you almost have to know where it is in advance now to even find it.

And they're very big on the tourist trinkets and everything else...

Their main summer festival is "Dildo Days: Fun the Whole Family!"

And the town is locally famous for its local treat, "Dildo Sticky Puddin'" - always written without the G, even though despite our hundreds of accents on this island, none of them drop the G. (i.e. "nothing" here would be said nudding in 99.9% of accents, and nothin' in absolutely 0% of them).
