What if names like Larkin, Metlife, and Travelstead were synonymous with NYC?

New York City to many is the greatest city in the world. But it could have been even greater. Many daring and amazing projects from long ago were not built. Over the coarse of the next few dozen pictures we will see some pictures of how NYC might have looked if some tenacious and bold projects were built like the Larkin, Metlife North, and Travelstead buildings and how NYC might look in the future with current proposed projects. But this could have changed the coarse of history as some other magnificent buildings could've been sent to B RATE STATUS. Remember there is no need to be accompanied by a barf bag, as I only included worthy and beautiful buildings. I will post ten pics a post. Now everyone close their eyes and open them again to see how New York City really might have looked in the 21st Century.

Too many syllables in those names.

A building's name needs to be able to be condensed into a punchy 3-letter acronym like ESB or be the setting for a rom-com in order to matter.

Nobody goes to New York with 'Americas Tower' on the itinerary.

Kanto Jun 22, 2011 11:36 PM

Seeing these pics just made me again think how awesome it would be if the Metlife North Tower got completed. The best thing about it is that it could be done. The foundations were made to support such a huge building. Now it only needs to find a developer who would be willing to finish it

(My internet was out for a month)

Now onto the greatest addition to the NYC skyline in over a century.

The beautiful Tower Verre rises above the rest

The Tower Verre has helped put MoMA on the map. Where ever you look at it from the skyline you know that's where the Museum of Modern Art is located.

Is your examination of Travelstead Tower going to feature a fully textured model?

SkyscrapersOfNewYork Jul 20, 2011 5:37 PM

the Metropolitan Life North Tower is without a doubt the most depressing loss......

At first I wasn't going to but now specially for you I'll make a textured model

hammersklavier Jul 21, 2011 4:30 PM

Shouldn't this be in the SketchUp subforum?

TANGELD_SLC Jul 21, 2011 5:31 PM

Fascinating. MNT is a true tragedy. I hope that one day it is completed, resplendent in the finest Art Deco design possible.

Roadcruiser1 Jul 21, 2011 6:27 PM

The Metropolitan Life North Building can still be completed even though it's only a small stump right now. The base can support another 80 floors to give the building 110 floors. That's the same number of floors the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center had.

I suggest that these canceled projects be a part of the next stage of Manhattan growth after the WTC. We need to reach higher in office buildings as well in residential towers. The demand is always there, and the skyline can be like it was in the early 20th century. ESB can retire as the Metlife would take its place as the tallest in the city and in the country.

Metlife can't go higher than 1700 feet, but it was supposed to go up to 1400 feet. 1WTC will be the tallest in America for a long time, until something like the Chicago Spire is built, which isn't likely. MORE PICS COMING VERY SOON.

So they can't install a spire on Metlife?

They can. That doesn't mean it'll look very good.

Instead of the Big Apple, the city would go by the Big Larkin.

Hey Scalziand good thing I listened to you and made a textured model. The Travelstead looks so awesome. It truly would've been the best Post Modern in the city.

Now on to the most amazing, outstanding Post Modern skyscraper not only in New York City but in the entire universe. (Such a depressing thing this wasn't built, this is light years ahead of what stands there today, not that {383 Madison} Bear Stearn's is a bad looking building but this was soooo much better. Mr. G Ware Travelstead and Kohn Pendersen Fox got screwed).

A building from the 30's, one from the 60's and the delightful one from the 90's have all changes NYC history and architecture in their own special way.

(THIS IS A 4 PICTURE PREVIEW. WHY? SO I CAN SAVE EVERYONE THE TROUBLE OF HAVING A HEART ATTACK RIGHT AWAY. TEXTURES PICTURES COMING TOMORROW)
