Amarillo, Texas
Hi, all. I moved to Amarillo in October and decided today to head downtown and get some pictures of the city for you. I haven't seen any threads dedicated to Amarillo, so this thread's probably a first.
Enjoy. http://img139.imageshack.us/img139/7...arillo001z.jpg We begin this journey inside my car, where it tells me the outside temperature is nearly 100. Nice. About four of the past six days have been 100 or higher. http://img217.imageshack.us/img217/6165/amarillo002.jpg Shameless plug of my employer. This is where I parked and headed on my foot-propelled tour. http://img221.imageshack.us/img221/4918/amarillo004.jpg Downtown Amarillo has lots of painted horses. I don't exactly get them, but I guess they're better than the pigs all over Cincinnati. http://img216.imageshack.us/img216/3719/amarillo006.jpg Here's the Amarillo Globe-News building. The Globe-News is Amarillo's newspaper. http://img216.imageshack.us/img216/2564/amarillo007.jpg The Santa Fe Building is Amarillo's second-tallest building. It's 188 feet tall and was built in 1930. It currently houses county offices. http://img132.imageshack.us/img132/9158/amarillo008.jpg The top of the building features red lettering that lights up brightly at night. It's visible for miles. http://img151.imageshack.us/img151/9762/amarillo009.jpg The Chase tower, the tallest building in the city. We'll pass by it later. http://img132.imageshack.us/img132/5151/amarillo010.jpg The Paramount Building. I don't know the history of it except that it used to house a theater and now has offices. http://img170.imageshack.us/img170/7100/amarillo011.jpg Sadly, a lot of downtown Amarillo looks like this. Closed buildings with boarded up fronts. The city's trying to revamp downtown, and there are a few projects going on that might kick up the place. http://img132.imageshack.us/img132/3586/amarillo015.jpg One of those projects is the Fisk Building. This 10-story building opened in 1927. I don't know how long it's been closed, but it's reopening in 2010 as a hotel. http://img222.imageshack.us/img222/273/amarillo019.jpg This sign gives the details. They just had a dedication ceremony a few weeks ago. They're gutting the building to make the hotel. http://img139.imageshack.us/img139/7599/amarillo022.jpg There we go. The Chase Tower, the tallest building in the city. It's 374 feet tall and apparently is the tallest building between Dallas and Denver. http://img229.imageshack.us/img229/2903/amarillo023.jpg Another view. http://img169.imageshack.us/img169/5489/amarillo026.jpg Another horse! http://img219.imageshack.us/img219/8117/amarillo030.jpg This is the Barfield Building. It opened in 1927. It's currently waiting to be fixed up and turned into condos, but that seems to be getting nowhere. Such is the case with a few abandoned buildings downtown. http://img229.imageshack.us/img229/5713/amarillo068.jpg The Barfield Building from the side. http://img229.imageshack.us/img229/8162/amarillo045.jpg Amarillo National Bank Plaza One. This 16-story building is the eighth-tallest in the city. http://img169.imageshack.us/img169/9950/amarillo040.jpg This is Plaza Two of the Amarillo National Bank Building. http://img140.imageshack.us/img140/8291/amarillo041.jpg The old Potter County Courthouse. It's closed. You can probably see the fencing around it. There's a bit of fighting about this building. Gut it, tear it town, keep it, etc. http://img140.imageshack.us/img140/5567/amarillo042.jpg The front entrance of the courthouse, taken over the fence. http://img217.imageshack.us/img217/395/amarillo043.jpg There's a tank next to the building, and even that's controversial. Some people want to move it, and that's got some veterans angry. http://img132.imageshack.us/img132/7996/amarillo046.jpg This is the courthouse that's currently in use. It's right across the street from the old courthouse. http://img403.imageshack.us/img403/4379/amarillo047.jpg This shapely building is the Globe-News Center for the Performing Arts. This place houses Broadway plays, concerts, singers, the works. I've heard it's got great acoustics. The design is supposed to imitate Palo Duro Canyon, the second-largest canyon in the U.S. The canyon is about 20 miles south of Amarillo. http://img269.imageshack.us/img269/6307/amarillo049.jpg Another view of the Globe-News Center. http://img216.imageshack.us/img216/9800/amarillo050.jpg Aw. Isn't it a cute little downtown? http://img216.imageshack.us/img216/2882/amarillo053.jpg The Herring Hotel opened in 1926. It's the third-tallest building in the city. It's been closed since the 1970s, and I haven't heard anything of what's to become of it. http://img216.imageshack.us/img216/2249/amarillo058.jpg Another horse. http://img119.imageshack.us/img119/9768/amarillo059.jpg As I wandered around, I found a bunch of unpainted horses sitting inside, surprise, an abandoned building. http://img216.imageshack.us/img216/7669/amarillo063.jpg An out-of-focus (bleh) shot of the Amarillo Building. It's about a block away from the Herring Hotel, and this side is a similar design. http://img161.imageshack.us/img161/6463/amarillo065.jpg The 10-story Maxor Building. Dark clouds started rolling in. http://img140.imageshack.us/img140/9697/amarillo067.jpg Another abandoned building. No idea what this guy is. http://img174.imageshack.us/img174/8301/amarillo070.jpg And here comes the rain. http://img148.imageshack.us/img148/3994/amarillo072.jpg The "WT" on the top of the Chase Tower lights up. That was added a few months ago because West Texas A&M University has some classes in the building. http://img140.imageshack.us/img140/2897/amarillo073.jpg No way! Another horse! http://img140.imageshack.us/img140/3087/amarillo074.jpg Many of the streets downtown are brick, a throwback to the old days. And that's downtown Amarillo by a fairly new resident. I hope you liked it. I'll probably do some more if demand is high. |
that old courthouse is a gem and very few examples of art deco in texas. hopefully, there are plans for it.

Nice pictures and welcome to the forum! You're right I don't know if Amarillo has ever had its own thread! Keep the pictures coming!

Rolled thru town one time on a trip to San Diego. Thought it was a nice stay over town for a steak and a beer. Saw the canyon too, it's pretty cool. Hope something's done to the boarded buildings.

Thanks!

That last abandoned building looks like a warehouse of some sort.
Interesting stuff. I haven't been to Amarillo since I was about five years old, and I remember the long ride in the car more than anything. Really liking the courthouse and the Santa Fe building. |
It's not very far between Amarillo and Denver. LOL. Nice shots.
|
Amarillo ain't my cup o' tea, but there are definitely some architectural gems there. Thanks for the tour!

I have family that lives in Amarillo. They never take me downtown when I visit. I kind of like the place, though. It's not very urban or cosmopolitan, but I've always still managed to enjoy my visits. The Palo Duro Canyon is beautiful, and worth checking out.

Welcome to the forum. I hope to see lots more pictures from you.
Man, I really hope they don't tear down the courthouse. That would be such a loss. Quote:

Very impressive. I always assumed Amarillo looked more like Pueblo.

Nice job ....and a bit of a metaphor for the good 'ole USA
Amarillo has let its core rot. This despite it growing over 3 times in size since 1940. If these buidlings could be supported then, they should be able to be supported now. However, AMarillo, like most of America, has chosen sprawl over reinvestment and densification.....I mean Amarillo is what less than 2000 / sq mile. If they had merely concentrated development at roughly twice that level (3800 / sq mile) the downtown would probably be alive and well. Unfortunately, locust development was chosen instead......I am sure there are plenty of single story strip malls throughout town |
Interesting photos!

Thanks for the photos! I drove through Amarillo once on HWY 40 and that being my only perspective, it didn't leave much of an impression. There are some nice old buildings there though. Nice job!
|
My parents moved there in January. Interesting, yet very odd place.
|
Nice shots, and welcome to the forum!
|
I'm pretty sure it's the tallest between Fort Worth and Denver. Not Dallas.
|
Thanks for the tour, especially braving all that heat to take these. I wonder how the county government sold the public on moving into a new courthouse. Frankly, I don't see the improvement.
