A Tribute to Québec

Let me pay tribute to Québec, a truly unique city within North America.
Here are pictures from my numerous day trips to the capital of the province of the same name, former heart of New France and Canada, founded in 1608 by Samuel De Champlain. Enjoy :-)

It does ! I did not know about Sainte Geneviève, I looked it up. In fact, lots of villages in the St. Lawrence valley, here, look like that. And it appears that Sainte Geneviève, MO, was founded by the French Canadians also. That's our architecture :-) And relics of old Nouvelle France.

french was spoken by some natives of my state until the mid twentieth century, mostly by descendents from quebec. it is the missing link between quebec and louisiana. the dialect is supposed to have used a lot of louisiana french slang.

Merci Franks !

It truly is. Other places like Détroit have also kept a certain "French Canadian" thing going on -- the divison of the agricultural land along the rivers, for instance, and the older rural architecture. I'll surely make researches about this dialect you wrote about. Days of pleasure ahead for sure. :-) It was interesting to read that though the lands west of the Mississippi were retroceded to Spain after 1763, that the French life simply continued in Sainte Geneviève. I guess it started to change more when Missouri state joined the USA.

also st. charles, st. louis, florrisant, etc. many french speaking people came over the mississippi when the illinois country fell to the british.

Tu me feras signe!

That's a very typical, very ordinary, nondescript village core from the St. Lawrence valley.

Makes sense that the architecture would be similar in the flyover inland parts of New France that got settled at the same approximate time.

I really need to add this Missouri town to my list of stops next time I pass through though :)

Exactly. Neuville was established as a seigneurie in 1653 and the parish was officially founded in 1679. Ste. Geneviève, MO, was settled around the same time, in 1735.
