St. John's in 2015-2016-2017

A new year; a new thread. This is where I'll post what'll surely be the too many pictures of St. John's I take in 2015. I'm starting this year with a new camera and it's taking me a little while to figure out/have fun with all the settings - so some of the first are quite shit but it gets better. :haha:

This first post is mostly of our first major snowfall of the winter, and a few from before it. All of the pictures are from January.

This morning I took a little detour on my commute to head out to the Battery and enjoy the sunrise. When I was living on the mainland, I used to despise the Battery. I always found it so embarrassing that it was all the mainland seemed to show to depict St. John's. Now that I'm back, I love it. It's everything I love about St. John's on steroids. Homerism or not, I'd be hard-pressed not to include it somewhere on a list of Canada's coolest residential neighbourhoods.

Earlier in the year... this is just a few mobile pictures, but with a story for a taste of my neighbourhood.

St. John's still has neighbourhoods pubs. They tend to be busier in the early afternoon than late at night, if you know what I mean. Some of them are beloved by hipsters, but most simply have a strong following of regulars from the neighbourhood. They basically serve the same community role as a church, really - but with (more) booze.

Although we've peeked inside before, none of our group of friends in the Rabbittown neighbourhood has ever been inside our local. Last night, Ayreonaut pushed to go downtown but it was too cold for the rest of us, so he suggested - hey, let's head down to the Pete, it's only half a block away.

I was genuinely apprehensive. It has a bad rep and this happened there just the other day:

http://i62.tinypic.com/4so0u9.jpg

But, we figured - fuck it, we're Rabbittownies, we might as well give it a shot. So come along and join us. :haha:

The pub is named after this fine fellow, via Wikipedia:

Quote:

Peter Easton (c. 1570 – 1620 or after) was a pirate in the early 17th century who operated along the Newfoundland coastline between Harbour Grace and Ferryland from 1611 to 1614. Perhaps one of the most successful of all pirates he controlled such seapower that no sovereign or state could afford to ignore him and he was never overtaken or captured by any fleet commissioned to hunt him down.[1] However, he is not as well known as some of the pirates from the late 17th and early 18th centuries.

We left our street in the freezing cold and walked the half block to the Easton.

http://i57.tinypic.com/a2sv4m.jpg

http://i60.tinypic.com/r883tx.jpg

http://i58.tinypic.com/bdjzg2.jpg

While we walked, we were cracking jokes about what our evening would be like. Ayreonaut imagined the only beer they'd offer would be Blue Star and I was sure we were going to be beaten up for some innocent offense.

When we got there, they had a lovely selection on tap and some quality booze. And...

My uncle was there, loaded. And his girlfriend was playing the VLTs. :haha:

http://i62.tinypic.com/21kkwhi.jpg

http://i58.tinypic.com/ehi23r.jpg

It was surprisingly busy, but the bartender said it was dead for a Saturday night because of the cold. There had to be about 20 people crammed in there from the surrounding streets, with lots coming in for just a pint or two and leaving, to be replaced by others.

http://i57.tinypic.com/29urod5.jpg

I popped out for a... breath of fresh air ;)... and took a shot of the houses across the street:

http://i57.tinypic.com/k0hbva.jpg

Love the interior French door as the main entranceway. :haha: And poor missus in the yellow house on the right, trying her best but the neighbourhood letting her down.

And the pub's parking lot:

http://i61.tinypic.com/kbyhs1.jpg

And a view back up toward the superette (basically a corner store with booze, cigarettes, lotto tickets, and a selection of groceries and household items) and near to where we live.

http://i61.tinypic.com/fbyeit.jpg

In typical St. John's fashion, I think everyone in the bar struck up a conversation with us at one point or another. We got invited for a surprise birthday party coming up for a woman from Nain, Labrador. We sipped a cognac recommended by an Englishman. ("I'm from Blackpool but I've been here 30 years now, b'y. I'm from here."). And we had a debate about whether or not Chicago has THE most urban river in the world.

http://i59.tinypic.com/2rdw0t3.jpg

There's a back area that's used for live music and karaoke every week.

http://i57.tinypic.com/5u4r9v.jpg

http://i62.tinypic.com/jkaxkn.jpg

http://i59.tinypic.com/9fy655.jpg

The karaoke is hosted by a woman from the neighbourhood. :haha: That's VERY important, apparently. The bartender explained the customers tried to give him shit when he first started because he wasn't from the neighbourhood. But he put an end to that sternly, and now they loves him.

http://i57.tinypic.com/2le4ef9.jpg

Around midnight, we headed back into the main part of the pub and just had a blast chatting with everyone.

http://i59.tinypic.com/33cm1dy.jpg

http://i59.tinypic.com/33yl7ih.jpg

http://i58.tinypic.com/51q88w.jpg

All in all, highly recommend the place. One of the most relaxed, enjoyable locals I've ever been inside. :)

And it was SO CHEAP. Even at prime time prices, with no specials, it was only $5.50 for a pint of Guinness and $4.50 for a pint of Kilkenny.

mr.John Jan 10, 2015 12:01 AM

What kind of camera did you get, did it cost you big $$$$

SignalHillHiker Jan 10, 2015 12:04 AM

No, I got it on special for $599 - a chunk of which was my Christmas present from my parents. :)

It's just entry level - Canon EOS Rebel T5i. But that's enough for me. It was a T3i that I had before.

mrnyc Jan 10, 2015 12:45 AM

i wish a every town had blocks of houses painted colorfully. it sure brightens things up.

Awesome my friend ! So colourful even in winter. You never go wrong with that city !

SignalHillHiker Jan 10, 2015 10:59 PM

J. and I got our snowshoes and broken them in on a little river trail in the city, just to make sure we don't kill ourselves out on the trails. It's AWESOME. I love it. Bit useless here, but it's fun.

Congrats and greetings from Madrid, Spain.

All right, that does it. :D

I'm going to Newfoundland. Not just saying it this time. Your threads have convinced me. I'm going on a cross country road trip this May-June (to celebrate college graduation), from Idaho to Maine, and now I'm going to change my end destination to Newfoundland.

I've never been, but it just looks so wonderful over there, like truly one of the gems of North America. The colorful architecture makes cold, grey, dreary weather feel like a bright and cheerful day. And when the sun is out? Man, that has to be truly a special view. I can't wait to see it. :)

Outstanding photos, I love how well you represent your home!

SignalHillHiker Jan 22, 2015 1:15 PM

:haha: Aww! Thank you. If you do we can have a forum meet in your honour. And if you need any help or recommendations, don't hesitate to ask.

Keep in mind it's very, very far east. We are a 1,277-mile drive from Bangor, Maine. If you're driving, take the ferry from mainland Canada to Argentia instead of Channel-Port-aux-Basques. It's much closer to St. John's. Unless you love driving. The west coast of the island is impressive and gorgeous but cutting across the middle is boring and long.

SignalHillHiker Jan 26, 2015 12:11 AM

A gorgeous evening for a photo run. I tried to get some different scenes - and update a few of my favourites now that 351 and Fortis Place are just about finished.

It's still very windy so a lot were blurred - I managed to salvage these. :D

Today, while the silver thaw is still on the trees, I went somewhere that I don't recall having properly photographed from ever before - the grounds of the Confederation Building. It's at the peak of the second hill of St. John's so you'll see the backside of the downtown core.

Basically, the red lines are my sight lines and they converge at the point I was standing.

The blue line is the horizon of the first hill of St. John's. Keep in mind the Southside Hills opposite the city are much higher so you'll still see hill above this horizon line. But everything you usually see from me is over that hill, between the horizon and the hillside in the distance.

Holy Heart and Brother Rice are the two big high schools to the upper left. They will soon be our last two downtown high schools as Booth and Bishop are being closed and combined with the new Waterford Valley High School in the west end.

This is one of the few areas where the Southside Hills have residential areas on them. They're Shea Heights to the left and, pictured, Kilbride.

We had a little forum meet last night - just us and cool millions from Halifax. It was a blast, though.

ICE FOG! My first time experiencing it. Lots of freezing rain and drizzle on my resume but no proper ice fog. It's insane.

We went to Adelaide Oyster House:

And despite the streets being completely fucking deserted, all the restaurants were blocked. We couldn't get a table and had to wait 30 minutes.

But the nice thing was when we got in, we were seated at one of the communal tables. They're for groups of 6 or fewer so they can meet and mingle.

St. John's is classier than I am. I had no idea these were covers for dress shoes. Totally thought they were just the ugliest fucking shoes ever, finished with electric tape.

Or maybe it's just as classy as I am...

In Newfoundland, the man who catches the garter at a wedding has to put it on the woman who caught the bouquet. Apparently there's an equivalent at proms now?

Cutest thing I've ever seen. I want a kid now just to put it in that.

New rooftop balcony under construction.

We tried to take a route with some stairs to get home because it was SO slippery.

It was brutal. We passed so many people who warned us to be careful, said their tailbones were shattered :haha:
