nice but i would put hong kong in front of new york, the view from victoria peak is amazing , and i think vancouver and toronto's skyline is better than calgary

yellowboy06 Jan 11, 2010 4:27 PM

I know Hong Kong and New York City are so close but, I chose NYC because you still have Downtown Brooklyn's skyline, and Lower Manhattan's skyline, and Jersey City's skyline! Which all add up to make an impressive and massive looking skyline!

Oh shit, those are some of the best skyline shots of NYC/Hong Kong/Chicago I've ever seen. Can you link me to the higher res versions please?

HomrQT Jan 11, 2010 5:43 PM

Great

I love how the person that started the thread compared them with these photos and they seem to be to scale, but Chicago could use a more updated photo. We're missing some big buildings in there. My top 5..

1.New York
2.Chicago
3.Hong Kong
4.Shanghai
5.San Francisco

chicago
new york (looks the best at night)
hong kong
seattle
shanghai (not right now but when current projects are finished)

Sorry, I have been a fool. I was hurrying last night to finish the last two and they are not that great now that I look at them...

I will change them now.

More like a list of top 5 night skylines? That's actually a pretty good list, though I might add Shanghai over Seattle or 'Couver.

uaarkson Jan 12, 2010 4:17 AM

Again, where are you getting these skyline shots? I'd really like larger versions of them.

Instead of 4th. Vancouver, Canada, put in place Sydney, Australia. Then would be OK. And go back, reedit to top 10 and put Shanghai and Dubai also, making an reorder.

:D

The thing to bear in mind, too, about Chicago's skyline is that this vista only represents a portion of it, albeit the most popular and photogenic.

What you're seeing here is just the Loop, but, directly to the north, you have an almost equally impressive lakeside cluster (Goldcoast, Streeterville) which then stretches more or less linearly and continuously northward along the lakefront-- for, what is it, nine miles?-- to the city's border with Evanston.

To the left-- that is, southward-- is the new and growing "south wall" of Grant Park (not pictured) which leads a procession of highrises-- more intermittent than their northside counterparts-- to Hyde Park.

Anyway, beautiful photos, everyone.

yellowboy: 4/5 from North America? Not being a little bit too NA-centric? You can still agree with yourself, mind you. :D

FFLush Jan 12, 2010 3:34 PM

I think you nailed it yellowboy06. I might put Seattle over Vancouver though. Sydney is a close sixth.

Dac150 Jan 12, 2010 8:39 PM

New York - Hong Kong - Chicago - Shanghai - Sydney

McBane Jan 12, 2010 9:27 PM

Dubai? :slob:

Dubai's skyline reminds me of a really tall version of Phoenix: isolated towers - without any cohesion - surrounded by flat sprawl and endless desert.

It has nothing on NYC, Hong Kong or Chicago in terms of building density and skyline cohesion. And Dubai lacks the natural beauty that punctuates smaller skylines like Seattle or Vancouver.

I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but isn't a beautiful skyline defined by how all the buildings - along with the natural environment (rivers, mountains, etc.) - look as a whole?

uaarkson Jan 12, 2010 9:32 PM

Dubai's skyline is endlessly boring, saved only by the Burj Dubai.

brandoncdg Jan 12, 2010 11:08 PM

I don't like Dubai's skyline at all. uaarkson: You are right, it is boring.

What's the deal with basically all of the entries being on the water? I really like NYC, Sydney, and Vancouver out of all the pics posted.

Uh, ports played a large role in the economic development of many of the world's largest cities.
