Not the greatest looking building, but IMO is one of the most powerful on the skyline. Any shot of Midtown and this building is always visible.

Question: Is this the largest building in NYC in terms of square footage?

hunser Sep 4, 2010 4:26 PM

:previous: no, it's second (3,140,000 sq ft) after 55 water street (3.8 million square feet). but yeah, metlife is one of the most massive towers in NYC and, generally speaking, in the US.

:previous: Yeah, 55 water street will likely have the most square feet for a very long time

Walter Gropius assisted Emory Roth in the design of this building. There is a commemorative plaque at the base of the building noting his contribution.

Isn't it one of the most hated buildings in New York?

It's a very powerful building and I actually love it.

It's more than that, Gropius was the the designer, Roth & Sons just the architect of record (basically they did the drawings and coordination). Gropius was responsible for turning the building 90 degrees and [killing/capturing/terminating] the view along Park Avenue.

I have a love hate relationship with this building.

Love it or hate it, it's without a doubt a prime fixture on the skyline.

If I had to rank the greatest works of brutalism ever created:

8. Dallas City Hall
7. National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder Colorado
6. Boston City Hall
5. Whitney Museum of American Art
4. Yale Library of Art
3. PanAm Building
2. Salk Institute
1. Empire State Plaza

This building could probably use a reclad in the near future, or at least a window wash.

They actually did a good job cleaning it a few years ago.

Now that is a building with a presence. I like its East and West veiws much better thant he Park Ave faces, though Park Ave South face can be stunning at dusk.

I still don't get why many would want to see this building demolished. You know you're in Midtown when you look down on Park Avenue and see this huge tower looming in the distance. Almost appears like a dead end. Also love how the base is exposed like that of the CitiGroup Center.

I stumbled right in front of this thing at night trying to find GCS, and as soon as I noticed it I felt like I was truly in a skyscraper city. One of those romantic, glittering super cities that you see in the movies.
