Calgary Music Festivals and Concerts

Stone Temple Pilots and The Tragically Hip to headline Virgin Festival Calgary
Canada's ultimate summer festival saddles up to take over Calgary!

CALGARY, April 8 /CNW/ - Hey there buckaroos! Virgin Festival, the
biggest rock festival in Canada, is heading west on June 21 and 22, 2008. At a
media event today the excitement kicked off with the announcement of this
year's amazing festival headliners. After traveling around the globe from Sir
Richard Branson's estate in Oxford, England, the news finally dropped that
alternative hard rockers Stone Temple Pilots will headline day one and rock
icons The Tragically Hip will headline day two.

Huge disappointment IMO. A Canadian band who comes thru here once every few years and a band that is slapped back together due to the fall of Velvet Revolver. I will not be attending this concert and wish I didn't live within earshot of it.

Is Richard Branson going to bring us a time-machine to transport us back to 1994 when STP and the Hip would have been relevant?

Some of the other acts look pretty good though.

Velvet Revolver broke up because STP were getting back together.

Circa 1995

Tragically Hip is still relevant however.

hey it's concert in calgary - cowboys and cows and flying pigs all round!

frinkprof Apr 8, 2008 7:48 PM

I didn't even know STP was getting back together. Good stuff.

Also, is it just me, or should a press release about a concert state where the concert is actually being held? Feel free to point it out to me if I missed it, but the venue isn't mentioned.

Do you people talk like that all the time? :haha:

I think Fort Calgary is the venue. Yeah, the lineup is a little dissipointing. I hope they announce some better bands in the coming weeks. I would go to this show if tix weren't $125!

very disappointing...V fest is usually stellar

entheosfog Apr 8, 2008 8:17 PM

Ugh. first off, what a horrible press release. Who wrote that?
But for the amount they're hyping it, it sure is disappointing who the headliners are. I'd go to see the Flaming Lips, Stars, New Pornographers and Constantines...that's pretty much it.

Coldrsx Apr 8, 2008 8:18 PM

thank god oasis is coming to fill my summer concert void

One would have to assume it was written by committee at Virgin headquarters. No one local would use the term 'buckaroos'.

Yeah, no doubt.

I guess that is implied since they held the press event there, but isn't explicitly stated. Certainly left me guessing.

The lineup isn't earth-shattering, but not too bad. Although, if I wanted to hear the Tragically Hip, I'd just turn on the radio and wait 5 minutes.

Doubt I'd be able to get the time off considering I'm also going to Iron Maiden that month.

Sigh. Toronto's site gets some cool graphics with the CN tower fashioned into a guitar and speakers in the skyscrapers, we get a few grazing cows, a flying cow, a chuckwagon, and a cheesy old west sign.

Re: the lineup, nothing particularly exciting other than STP getting back together. Any idea if any additions will be made to the lineup between now and then?
