BST3 (Standard Life Centre III)| 69.6 m | 17 fl | Proposed

Site Plan application

Project consists of an 18 storey office building with retail space on the ground floor and 3 levels of underground parking

Why is the new portion of the facade along Bank set back more than the heritage facades? IMO this creates a discontinuity that disrupts the flow of "Main Street" feel of Bank.

Site Control sign from Bank Street - It says 333 Laurier and 152-160 Bank Street - quite a lot of frontage along Bank

In the article they mention:

There are also two historical three-storey buildings on the block. A city summary of the site plan proposal said the facades of these buildings will be preserved.
I hadn't seen that on my quick glimpse through the development application, which concerned me as it is something that is key. The brick facades are something that are an essential component the length of Bank Street, and especially on the edge of the CBD should be preserved.

holy smokes

but's what's with the render that makes the block look like it's surrounded by a forest?

UPDATE: This is the context it actually sits in, with the Mondrian just south of it

I definately like it - reasonably not glass-boxish.

Some of the architectural styling seems similar to the EDC building. It might be nice to see a bit of a typical "Ottawa" style of architecture without that being (once again) glass-boxish (or worse, teal glass-boxish).

citizen j Dec 19, 2009 4:24 AM

Oh, yeah baby!!
Do it. Do it right now!
Even that hideous building at the corner of Bank and Laurier is partially redeemed (i.e., swallowed into a continous street wall) by this design. Phenomenal.
It will complement the Telus Building and Mondrian quite well.

waterloowarrior Dec 19, 2009 6:50 AM

Agreed, looks good! The architect for this one is B+H Architects (Bergman + Hamann), who also designed 131 Queen.

Also, the height in 69.60 m

I'm impressed, hopfully it will start in the spring.

Ah life in the age of glass and steel. Raise your glass to another grand dame's arrival at the raging party that is the Downtown Ottawa renaissance. You know what I love most about this building? The fact that the old red brick buildings get restored to their original look. There are so many decent, utilitarian heritage buildings downtown that have the ground floor facade ruined by stucco/plaster/neon crap that totally hide its' true character. Let's hope they scrape all the junk off the exterior like the renderings suggest.

This must be the most elegant statement I've ever read on an internet forum. (I agree wholeheartedly to everything you said, too).

I'm flattered you appreciate my work, Ottawan... you aren't by any chance a gorgeous young blonde woman are you?

Ottawan Dec 19, 2009 11:13 PM

Sorry, neither blond, nor a woman, just someone who enjoys a good turn of phrase. But for those ladyfolk who are on the forum, I do assure you that I may at times have been described as gorgeous.

Is it just me, or does the render look like it should be the headquarters of Evil Industries Inc.?

drawarc Dec 20, 2009 2:53 AM

Looks real nice, should be good addition to downtown.

harls Dec 20, 2009 10:57 PM

I wasn't expecting that.. I thought there would be a tower the same as the other two. This is a good surprise!
