Is this the same location where at one time a 50 story residential highrise was to be built?

MNMike Sep 21, 2011 3:53 PM

Nope, that was "The Nicollet" and 10th and Nicollet...that is now the site of a proposed 30-45 story office tower, likely for Target Corp.

RobertWalpole Sep 21, 2011 4:54 PM

Great news. What's currently on the site?

MNMike Sep 21, 2011 5:35 PM

A vacant lot. The site has a lot of history actually:

It was formerly home to Powers department store, which was a big local competitor to Dayton's. The stores were then bought by Donaldson's, another local dept. store chain(I still have shopping bags from there for some reason). Donaldson's was bought by Carson Pirie Scott...It is said that nobody liked the name change from Donaldson's, and that is what drove them out of the market. That chain left the area in the mid 90's, and this lot was cleared in 1994. Power's, Donaldson's, and Dayton's were the 3 big department stores on Nicollet(along with a couple other national chains)...and all remained open under one name or another until the mid 90s. Ah, the age of the department store. There are still a few department stores downtown, but only one flagship building remains. But I digress:)

Apparently it has a sort of brise soleil up top which could push the height close to 400', I would guess.

Looks like there is gonna be 5-6 floors of office/retail. I counted 34 floors and I hope by contruction time they bump it up a few more floors. The roof alone looks to be 3-4 floor high! Nice looking tower.... Great for Minneapolis.

Thanks for posting, I was going to if nobody else did. If built, would be a nice addition. I'm with Dale, between the 9-10' ceilings, base, and spire, should be around 400'.

MNMike Sep 21, 2011 11:23 PM

There is lots of development happening right now...we are going to need a compilation thread soon! Also, I am thrilled that we are getting not one, but 2 full service grocery stores downtown! Finally. That can only help lure more folks to the neighborhood...finally there will be more than the Target grocery section and the small markets(don't get me wrong, I am all for a small mom and pop too).

Whoa, a 45 story tower with tall floor heights could get pretty darn close to overcoming the triplets.

Complex01 Sep 22, 2011 9:40 PM

Oooo I like this one. Looks really nice. Very Kewl. :-)

Thanks for the clarification.

The height on this is 357', and it is on the Minneapolis planning commission agenda for today.

This is an awesome looking tower!

newstl2020 Dec 15, 2011 6:56 AM

They have been drilling for soil samples on the site since the beggining of last week. This podium for this thing is going to take up the entire half block and will connect with the 5th street towers skyway to no-where on the East end of the site.

Dale Dec 15, 2011 9:37 PM

I like the design - and that it's going ahead - but 357' is a little underwhelming. There was talk earlier of better than 400.'

daperpkazoo Dec 23, 2011 3:16 PM

This was approved by the planning commission last week.

And for those speculating about 5-10 floors of office: if you look through the plans on the MPLS PC site, you'll see that the only office space is on the skyway level. It's labeled as retail/office, but looking at the size and shape of it, I'm guessing it's more likely to be office. There's also first floor retail, of course. The space fronting Marquette is pretty large and includes double-height ceilings... hopefully somethig cool goes in there.
