Mayor Nutter held a press conference a few minutes ago to talk about plans for the 1600 block of Vine Street, which will have two new facets — residential and religious. Designed by Robert A.M. Stern Architects, the complex will include a 32-story tower with 258 rental apartments and 13 three-story townhouses; a 24,000-square-foot Mormon Family History Center and community center; retail shops; and “a new tree-lined privately-owned public street [that] will connect Vine Street to Wood Street.”

Something about this rendering says "Uptown" to me, in a good, swanky kind of way. I love it.

Well, Flyers2001, there's that expansion you were talking about in the SLS thread! (Commented on the aerial view of Philly):)

I actually like it. It looks like it was there for years (in a good way, not imposing or sticking out like a sore thumb, etc.)

I for one welcome our new Mormon overlords and the tastefully designed palaces from which they shall benevolently rule over us.

More good news. I'm sure this will be a quality project with Stern on board--this is his specialty after all.

Good looking infill. While I would have preferred a flashier tower at such a visible location, Stern's designs are always classy looking. They're the kind of quality designs with classic massing that make the more modern towers really pop in contrast. I'm really happy the base seems to be ringed with street level retail.

It is going to be a welcomed tower to the city's skyline.

If the Chinatown Eastern Tower (below) gets built at 1001 Vine Street in addition to the Mormon Tower at 16th and Vine, things will be very interesting driving up Vine from the Ben Franklin Bridge area.

I think the new Mormon tower is very nice and classy.

Can't wait to walk into a bar there and see an 18 beer tap of nothing but O'Douls.

Or the Starbucks that serves only decaf.

What's there now? It is an empty/parking lot?

Yes...a parking lot that I often walk past and yearn for it to be developed. Isn't it fun when wishes come true?

This area will be completely different when this gets built, the new apartments at Broad and Callowhill/Wood, Museum Towers II, the temple, etc...and imagine if the Provence is the casino selected.

Will be exciting to watch!

We should put together a whole list of Center City parking lots for you to walk past. :P

Haha - don't worry. There are plenty more on my wish list - but this one was high up there!

I hope they re-landscape the on ramp for the Vine Street Expy directly to the east of the Mormon Tower, because right now both the uncapped Expy and the on ramp seem to suck away any cohesion this tower would provide to that area. Perhaps they could put a sculpture where the two loops split, or make the grassy area into a park separated from the highway. I think if this is successfully done, we could see North Broad making leaps and bounds in next 5 years.

Not to get off topic, but I believe that the Provence's plans or at least its renderings included landscaping those ramps so that they match the French theme of the casino. This is, of course, dependent on whether the Provence gets picked.
