CitizenM Budget Luxury Hotel Rising Near Times Square

Quote:

CitizenM, the Dutch hotelier aiming for budget-minded travelers with an eye towards luxury, is building up at 218 West 50th Street, where 230 guest rooms will soon be welcoming some of the 50 gazillion visitors who come to town each year. The concept for the 19-story hotel is by Concrete, the Amsterdam firm that's put together a batch of hospitality sites for CitizenM in "target cities" worldwide. Concrete uses a modular system, "completely prefabricated in CitizenM's own production facility and subsequently transported to the building site, where they are assembled to create the hotel." What's rendered inside for the New York flagship near Times Square is a blend of bar and work-place lounge, perfect for cocktails and laptops with lots of room for communing with friends and fellow travelers.

Outside, the design shows a dark grid in metal, brick and glass, with big open patches for signage in lights. Above it all will be a roof-top bar, perched 250 feet up in the midtown sky, topped by a crown emblazoned with a slight twist on a classic phrase. Local firm Montroy Anderson DeMarco is the executive architect on the project, and they call the plan "ultra clean and simple." Hmmmm. Maybe the crazy images from Concrete got tossed—or lost in translation. The money behind this stack of fun and games comes from Brack Capital, the folks who brought us the cantilevered James New York in Soho. There's still no word when work will start on the downtown outpost of CitizenM, long planned but still stalled at the intersection of Delancey and the Bowery. (Demolition on the site appears to be coming soon.) The midtown site hopes to have rooms ready for citizens of the world by April 2013.

THE BIG APPLE Mar 19, 2012 12:20 AM

I'm not liking all this. I haven't been liking the Times Square Redevelopment since 1998. They had a major opportunity to replace parking lots, and beautiful old buildings, with magnificent architecture. While most of the office buildings haven't disappointed (11 TS, 10 TS, BofA Tower etc.) The Hotels have been the most second rate pieces of trash ever.

Very lame. Fortunately, it will be obscured when the adjacent property on B'Way and W 50th St is redeveloped.

Looks just like another McSam special. :(

You'll never even know it's there once completed - this will be engulfed.

Definitely.

Midtown is absolutely booming right now, and I can't imagine how many new projects will be rising/completed in another five years--off the top of my head, those actually u/c or imminently so right now include this, One57, 250 W55th, 237 W54th, 1715 Bway, the Hyatt on 45th, the Gem Tower, 1045 6th Ave (I think that's the addy? the one catty corner to Bryant Park), 57th street Pyramid, 432 Park, and several other budget hotels in the west 30s.

Seriously, I fail to understand why city planning can't mandate through zoning that buildings respect the city's street walls. It is getting out of hand.

Busy Bee Apr 12, 2012 8:55 PM

^Agreed. Its irks the hell out of me to. Its obviously a product of the cities' FAR zoning formula, but you would think there would be a common sense amendment that would prevent unsightly party walls from being exposed. To be honest I think the urban fabric can tolerate some structures' facades deviating from the streetwall property line, and dare I say sometimes it can be a good thing to mix things up a bit a break a long monotonous line BUT it's the exposure and apparent disregard of the neighboring buildings sides that drives me bonkers. I've always wondered why developers/property owners of new buildings could not come into a simple agreement to "wrap" a neighbors unsightly abutting walls with a material that is spec'd for the building under construction. In other words, integrate the neighbors newly exposed walls due to setback, with the architecture of the new structure.

It's growing slowly... I just want to see how this will be your glass.

RoldanTTLB May 31, 2012 3:15 PM

I am curious how this will be modular. I wonder if they'll be loading hotel rooms in then slapping up a curtain wall. Hmm.

CarlosV Jun 16, 2012 5:22 PM

this one grew in the last few weeks..... :)

I have "mixed emotions" but for some reason i think this little tower will be HOT!

That's not the cladding, is it?

Ghastly building, with exposed concrete sides. I hope they will cover them somehow.

CarlosV Aug 2, 2012 4:28 PM

i think it's gonna be a great little tower :P
