Historic Vancouver Videos
There are nowadays some very nice historic Vancouver videos online, so perhaps it is in order to have a collective thread for them. :)
As i think none such thread already exists, I shall start one with an interesting video of the 80's economic strategy for Vancouver which ended up materializing much like planned. So many big projects were outlined in this plan that moved Vancouver towards the city it nowadays is. North Vancouver looks pretty similar afar as today. Not too much has changed in past 30 years as per that video.
I liked the aerial video. Never seen it before. |

Driving across the completed bridge in 1947. Note how much lower the bridge deck used to hang. Funny how little there was on North Shore at that time. I wonder if the tolls ever paid back the investment in the bridge? :rolleyes: Also an interesting video from 1993, before the rehabilitation. Funny comments around traffic congestion in Downtown, already 23 years ago. :D I wonder how many lanes the bridge would have if built today? My guess is 6 lanes which hopefully would be stacked (one in tunnel) through Stanley Park, if not both. Or perhaps it would not even happen in this time and age. Plowing through virgin Stanley Park feels like an odd thing to even think about these days. |
Construction of Canada Place in 1984.
Burrard Inlet from Second Narrows to Lions Gate Bridge in 1951. Interesting how both road and train traffic used to use the train bridge that's still there. There also used to be car ferries over the inlet to North Vancouver? Pattullo Bridge under construction back in 1937. People of today don't know that also Pattullo used to be tolled, just like all crossings back in the day. Vancouver skyline in 1984 with Expo'86 under construction. This view has changed so much! |
