From Moscow to Beijing by train. Part Three : The Great Baikal

So here is the third thread about my trip from Moscow to Beijing by train.
As a reminder, here are the links towards the two first threads :
- the first thread (about Moscow) :http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/showthread.php?t=185517
- the second thread (about Siberia) :http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/showthread.php?t=185578

In this thread, I will post pics of Baikal Lake and Irkoutsk where I stayed two days before taking again the train towards Mongolia.

1- At about 60 or 70 km from Irkoutsk, the Baikal lake, a true inland sea in Siberia. The deepest lake in the world, containing 20 % of the world's surface fresh water !

Fascinating stuff! Thank you so much! It really exemplifies IMO the stark contrast between old post-Soviet/post-industrial Russia and new quickly developing Russia, especially in small towns like Listvyanka. If you only look at certain shots it almost looks like Afghanistan, and there is just so much abandoned stuff, holy crap, but at the same time there is lots of new construction and new cars mixed in as well.

Oh and its nice to see the swastika reclaiming its original meaning which is a Buddhist symbol of peace.

Russia needs a makeover..

Cool pics once more mate! :)

Wonderful thread!

The towns in the country side look quite rundown.

I think 81 is one of my farourites :-)

What a great vacation! I love seeing rural Russia. Nice photos, thanks!

olga Oct 11, 2010 7:37 PM

Love it! What a great thread. I was here 17 years ago (oh my, time flies!). It looks very much alike actually, but also alot of new stuff. Like those fancy houses. Thanks a lot for sharing! (You can see my old pics here)

Thank you for posting these. I enjoy your photos a lot.

These are very interesting!!

itom 987 Oct 12, 2010 6:45 AM

This is a perspective on Russia that we rarely see on the forum. Excellent job, I eagerly await the next thread!

Coldrsx Oct 12, 2010 4:17 PM

Fascinating indeed!

SHiRO Oct 15, 2010 2:04 AM

Wow, it's like another century over there.

Great stuff!

Nowhereman1280 Oct 15, 2010 2:48 AM

I'm dating a girl who grew up on the shores of this lake. Its interesting to see how different her childhood must have been. She doesn't have a whole lot of photos since they were all on film and her extended family still has most of them over in Russia.

JCON Oct 15, 2010 3:02 AM

I have been anticipating your updates. Amazing stuff, thank you for sharing!

mthq Oct 16, 2010 5:28 PM

so like uhh... when are we getting Part 4? :)

le calmar Oct 16, 2010 6:44 PM

Amazing... I want to visit this place one day. This lake containing 20% of the world's surface fresh water is a bit surprising given the size of this lake compared to some others. But I just checked on Wikipedia and it is so deep that it contains more water than the 5 Great Lakes combined)

Sorry, I was very busy this week, but I will try to post the Part Four (about the crossing of the russo-mongolian border) tonight or tomorrow !
Then there will be at least a part 5 and a part 6.

Thanks to all for the comments !

@olga : I will watch your pics with a lot of interest. Thanks !

Good to see that you re-uploaded these. Some of those houses look pretty nice, although the infrastructure in the little lake settlements gives another impression.
